GET READY FOR THE 110TH ANNUAL CANOWINDRA SHOW

This year marks the 110th Canowindra Pastoral, Agricultural & Horticultural Association's Show, and its 111th anniversary. The "First Annual Exhibition" organised by the Canowindra PA&H Association was held Wednesday 7 March 1900 at the site of the current Sports Oval. With over 2,000 attendees and 48 entries, the Association's nett profit was 102 3s 8d. The Association changed the date so the Show would be held in Spring in the year 1909, and due to the Second World War there was no Show held in 1943, hence the 110th Show over 111 years. The Ladies Auxiliary was formed in 1940, and the first women were accepted onto the Show Committee in 1963: being the legendary Nita Bassett, and Frances Wensley. The first Friday night Show was held in 1965 under the presidency of Alan Wythes, and has been held on the Friday night before the fourth Saturday of the month ever since. With many competitions and events being planned for the 110th Show, it will be one of the biggest Canowindra has seen for many years. The Show Schedule is being updated and compiled at the moment and will be available soon. Should anyone wish to become a Show member it is only $25, which is the cost of a family ticket, and allows you free admission for yourself, your partner and children attending school into the ground and grandstand, at all exhibitions of the Association, and free entry of exhibits, unless otherwise specified in the exhibition schedule. HISTORICAL LINKS On Tuesday 21 June four members of the Hartley Advisory Committee met with local historians at the Age of Fishes to discuss how a possible HartleyCanowindra link could work. Several important Canowindra pioneers came from Hartley as early as the 1820s as settlement expanded west after the road over the Blue Mountains was built. Canowindra names such as Collett Parish north of the Belubula, Moyne, dating back to the Grant home in Ireland, and Tralee, likewise for the Finn family, are permanent reminders of the link with Hartley. It is 200 years since John Grant I came to Australia and a Grant family reunion is being planned for the Long Weekend in October. Admission prices for non-members* in 2011 are: Adults: $15, School children: $5, Aged Pensioners: $5, Family Ticket: $25. *Non-members leaving ground will have to pay for re-admission as no passes out will be given. The Show Society is organising free kids' novelty races such as the egg and spoon, sack and three legged race, as well as a code against code tug-o-war for our local football players. There will be the very popular team penning, an ute competition and working dog trials this year, and old crowd favourites including vintage tractor pull, show dogs, wood chopping and shearing comp. The Society is also looking for stewards for fodder and prime cattle, so if you want to get on board and help organise some entries and judges, the committee will help you out. The Ladies Auxiliary are organising their usual wonderful display of home growns, home mades, children's handiwork, crafts and needlework, and especially for this year, an historical display of past Shows. Everyone is invited, and encouraged, to get involved in the Show and enter exhibits and events. The Show exists to showcase the excellence of Canowindra's produce and talented residents, so show off a bit...that's what it is all about!

PYTHONS PIPPED The Pythons played host to the Blayney Rams on Saturday afternoon, and the day was perfect for the great crowd that turned up for Sponsors Day. Blayney were first to get the ball and showed they were pretty keen to run it from their own half. Great defence from the back line saw the ball jolted from the Blayney attacker and Sam Wythes scoopd it up and ran 50 metres down the park, tackled 15 out from the try line. He popped a pass off to the flying Huw Wills, who was cut down only a couple of metres out. From the ruck Adam Nash picked the ball up only to have it stripped out of his hands by an off side Blayney player who was penalised, though Canowindra was unlucky not to have a penalty try awarded to them. Canowindra kept the pressure on but were not able to break through the Blayney defence. After another penalty the Pythons decided to settle the play down and take the 3 points on offer thanks to Tom Abbott who slotted over the goal. The half belonged to Blayney who scored 2 unanswered tries, taking a 14-3 lead. The Pythons dominated in the second half in the break downs, with plenty of good cleaning out from Adam Grant, Clint Oborn and Rolls Townsend. With the added pressure at the rucks Canowindra were edging closer to the try

line. Rolls soon made his presence more pronounced on the field by diving through the Blayney line and getting Canowindra's first 5 pointer for the day. Tom converted to take the score 14-10. The restart saw Canowindra's back line dominating and forwards getting hammered in the scrums by a more experienced and bigger pack. Dan Muldoon back after breaking his Jaw 4 weeks ago was lucky not to get it broken again after a blatant head high while on the charge. Dan and Aaron Woolley combined well and made plenty of charges down the field. Canowindra stook fast on their own line to put a dent in Blayney's confidence. With Aarron's kicking game getting Canowindra back on the attack Rolls soon crossed for his second try to give the Pythons the lead with less then 10 to go. Tom converted taking the score to 17-14. Blayney fought their way back and put pressure on the Python line out where a Blayney forward scooped up the loose ball and dived over the line to put Blayney in front with only 2 minutes to go. The Pythons found themselves on the attack with Dan Muldoon putting a kick over the top of the Rams defence for Lachie Noble to chase down although he got a bad bounce over the try line he was able to knock it back to Sam Wythes and NOMINATIONS FOR NSW CARERS AWARDS The Member for Dubbo Troy Grant has called on the community to nominate someone whos made an outstanding contribution as a carer for this years NSW Carers Awards. Often the work of carers goes unnoticed, but they are some of the most inspirational people in our society, Mr Grant said. They have sacrificed their lives to care for a loved one who may be aged and frail or have a disability. There are eight categories for the NSW Carers Awards including: Young Carer / Senior Carer / Caring Partner / CarerFriendly Workplace / Carer Support Group / Caring Family or Parent / Caring Volunteer or Community Member / Caring School. The Awards, now in their second year are held in partnership with Carers NSW and the NSW Government. This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the carers in our local community, Mr Grant said Over 150 recipients from local government areas in NSW will be honoured during NSW Carers Week, celebrated between 16 - 23 October 2011. Eight ambassadors representing carers from each of the categories will be invited to a state ceremony where the 2011 NSW Carer of the Year will be announced. Points for the day went to Stu Gavin who had a real tough day in the front row though did not once take a back ward step were a lot of people would of. 2 points went to Adam Grant. 1 point went to Tom Abbott, Clint Oborn and Dan Bowd. Players' Player was easily won by Stu Gavin. After the speeches the loss was soon put at the back of the boys minds with a great night with a huge crowd at the Hypnotist. Everyone had a ball with plenty of laughs had by all. Thanks to all our willing volunteers for the great night. A huge thank you must go to everyone that helped set the day up and also packing up especially to Rob and Marg Morris for donating the accommodation for Roger and his wife. This weekend the Pythons travel to Orange to take on the Waratahs so hopefully the weather warms up again by Saturday and the boys put on a good show. To the editor...
I was bemused to see the posters in the IGA deriding the 'nanny state' in response to the federal government's push for plain paper packaging of cigarettes. Whether or not we agree with plain paper packaging of cigarettes, there is no question of the link between smoking and a wide range of health conditions, including cancer. I'm sure anyone who signs the petition will still be looking for the 'nanny state' who run the public health system to foot the bill for any treatment which is required for their smoking related illnesses. ART PRIZE FOR LANDSCAPE PAINTING The 2011 Essential Energy Art Prize for Landscape Painting Countryscapes closes in just under one month. Each artist has until Friday, 29 July to submit up to three entries in the annual prize one of the most popular landscape painting competitions in Australia. Essential Energys managing director, Terri Benson, said the stature of Countryscapes, now in its ninth year continued to grow across the State, boosting the profile of regional artists and art galleries. Hosting the Essential Energy Art Prize for Landscape Painting is an unique opportunity to showcase the vast talent of local artists while adding to the cultural and social fabric of the 1,500 regional communities we serve, Terri said. Essential Energy is proud to be able to contribute to the sustainability of regional areas, not only by investing in the power network and local jobs, but through community events like Country capes.

The $35,000 Art Prize is only open to anyone who lives in Essential Energys network area and includes all artistic styles, mediums and contexts. Each year a different regional gallery hosts the event with the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery home to the competition in 2011. I encourage eligible artists to enter Countryscapes and use the opportunity to express the beauty and diversity of our regional landscapes both natural and man-made, Terri said. This years panel of judges includes: artists Victoria Lobregat and Trevor Weekes, Maitland Regional Art Gallery Cultural Director, Joe Eisenberg OAM, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Director, Richard Perram, and celebrated Sydney painter and academic, Ian Grant. Entries close on Friday, 29 July 2011 and the winner will be announced in November. The finalists exhibition will be held at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery from 25 November 2011 to 15 January 2012.

TIGERS WIN THREE GRADES The Tigers enjoyed the trip to Grenfell last Sunday coming away from Lawson Park with victory in all three grades. It was an important win for the first grade side as they leap frogged the Goannas into second place. Nick Whatman and his pack of forwards dominated play with Tigers 30-6 at the half time break. Nick was physical in defence and dangerous in attack with his charging runs, clever offloads and backing up the ball runner. It was a forwards game as gusty conditions made passing wide difficult and plenty of mistakes made, it didnt stop Lachlan Watson though as he scored his second double in as many weeks. The Tigers were on the job in the second half running out winners 54-18. Aaron Earsman played his best game in the senior side with some strong defence including a great cover tackle in front of the vocal crowd; Earsman also backed up well and was rewarded with two tries, hes also becoming a regular in the try scorers column. Brenton Woolley was again tireless in defence and extremely elusive in attack. It was Nick Whatman that stole the day; he was easily the best player on the field as he led the Tigers to second place on the ladder. Thanks: The Tigers must recognise the hard work of all the volunteers who have contributed over the years from junior League. Why? WOODBRIDGE CUP YOUTH LEAGUE: In the Youth League match played between the Tigers and Goannas at Grenfell attack was the main fixture of the game with the Tigers putting 62 points on the board to defeat Grenfell 62-6. Every member of the team played well with Tim Holly, Harry Myers and Kain Earsman yet again leading the way in defence and taking the ball up hard. Brodie Friend played well out of hooker and Jayden Brown and Simon Whatman played well backing up from the Under 16s. Samuel Wallace and Brendon Zahra played well in the forwards with Blake Willson, Brydon Hughes and Matt McLean performing well in the backs. Nick Willson was safe under the high ball in windy conditions. Brendan Traves and Nick Traves made good metres with their strong hit ups. The Tigers have the bye next week and play Condo at Condo in two weeks time. TIGERS V BLUE HEELERS IN LOCAL DERBY This Sunday sees the long awaited return clash between Cargo Blue Heelers and Canowindra Tigers at Tom Clyburn Oval. This local derby is a must see when two of the top Woodbridge Cup teams go head to head. The Tigers just got home in the first round as they were fitter then the Cargo team. Now, ten rounds into the competition, the fitness advantage is gone. League Tag kicks off at 1pm followed by the main game at 2pm. Bar and canteen facilities will be available. Milestone: Rob Burn is set to score his 1,000th first grade point on Sunday at Canowindra Oval. Rob needs just a solitary point as he currently sits on 999 points. Rob has been a mainstay in the Tigers team since 2005, playing 110 games, kicking 348 goals, scoring 75 tries and potting 3 field goals. Lets hope the Tigers give Rob an opportunity to reach the milestone this Sunday in front of his home crowd.
