LECTURE NOTES

Item Analysis

-is a statistical technique which is used for selecting and rejecting the items of the test on the
basis of their difficulty value and and discrimination power.

Purpose of Item Analysis

 To select the best available items for the final form of the test.
 To identify structural or content defects in the items.
 To detect learning difficulties of the class as a whole.
 To identify the areas of weaknesses of students in need of remediation.
 To increase instructor’s in the test construction.
 To identify specific areas of course which need greater emphasis or clarity.

Benefits and Limitations of Item Analysis

Benefits

 It provides useful information for class discussion of the test.

 It provides data which helps students improve their learning.
 It provides insights and skill that lead to preparation of better tests in the future.

Limitations

 It cannot be used for essay items

 Teacher must be cautious about what damage may be due to the table of specifications
when items not meeting the criteria are deleted from the test. These items are to be
written or replaced.

Difficulty Index (P+ Value)

-An item’s difficulty index is obtained by calculating the p value (p) which is the proportion of
students answering the item correctly.

Range: The range is from 0% to 100%, or more typically written as a proportion as 0.0 to 1.00
(p-value), the higher the value the difficult the item.
FORMULA

Here are two illustrative samples:

Determine the Difficulty Index by dividing the number who got it correct by the total number
of students:

Discrimination Index

- refers to how well an assessment differentiates between high and low scorers. In other words,
you should be able to expect that the high-performing students would select the correct answer
for each question more often than the low-performing students.
