Practise Problems Set01

1. A magnetic tape passes around guide pulleys and through an erasing head, resulting in a tension of 11.0 N. The problem asks to determine the tension in a supporting spring. 2. Two collars connected by a wire can slide on frictionless rods. Given a force on one collar, the problem asks for the tension in the wire and force needed to maintain equilibrium. 3. PRACTISE PROBLEMS – SET 01

1. A magnetic tape under a tension of 10.0 N at D passes around the guide pulleys and through
the erasing head at C at constant speed. As a result of a small amount of friction in the
bearings of the pulleys, the tape at E is under a tension of 11.0 N. Determine the tension T
in the supporting spring at B. The plate is horizontal and is mounted on a precision needle
bearing at A. (Answer: 10.6 N)

2. Collars A and B are connected by a 525 mm long wire and can slide freely on frictionless
rods. If a force P of magnitude 341 N is applied to collar A, determine (a) the tension in the
wire when 𝑦𝑦 = 275 mm, and (b) the magnitude of the force Q required to maintain the
equilibrium of the system. (Answer: 𝑇𝑇 = 651 N, 𝑄𝑄 = 496 N)
3. A drum of 600 mm radius with mass centre, G, at its geometric centre, has a total mass of
1600 kg, and rests on a cradle consisting of two long rollers of 240 mm diameter. The
rollers rest on a smooth horizontal surface and are prevented from separating by horizontal
links, one on each end of the rollers as shown. Calculate the tension T in each link, and the
reaction R between the drum and each roller. (Answer: 𝑇𝑇 = 3.79 kN, 𝑅𝑅 = 10.91 kN)

4. The tapered pin is forced into a mating tapered hole in the fixed block with a force, 𝑃𝑃 =
400 N. If the force required to remove the pin is 𝑃𝑃′ = 300 N, calculate the coefficient of
friction between the pin and the surface of the hole. (Hint: The pressure normal to the
tapered surface of the pin remains unchanged until the pin actually moves. Answer: 0.122)

5. Suppose you wish to carry a horizontal stack of books. You can apply a compressive force
of 120 N at the ends of the stack with your hands. The mass of each book is 1 kg. The
coefficient of static friction between your hands and a book is 0.6, and between any two
books is 0.4. What is the maximum number of books you can carry in the stack? (Answer:
11 books)
6. The rigid member ABC is attached to the vertical x – y surface by a ball and socket joint at
A, and is supported by the cables BE and CD. The mass of the member may be neglected
compared with that of the 5 Mg load which it supports. There is one position of D (denoted
by x) along the horizontal slot through which the cable must be passed and secured for the
member to maintain the position shown. Find x. (Answer: 3.75 m)

7. The power unit of the post-hole digger supplies a torque of 450 N-m to the auger. The arm
B is free to slide in the supporting sleeve C, but is not free to rotate about the horizontal
axis of C. If the unit is free to swivel about the vertical axis of the mount D, determine the
force exerted against the right rear wheel by the block 𝐴𝐴 (or 𝐴𝐴′) which prevents the
unbraked truck from rolling. (Hint: View the system from above. Answer: 187.5 N)
8. The portable hoist shown is used to raise construction materials to the roof of a building.
The hoist has a mass of 50 kg with mass centre at G. If a 90 kg load is supported by applying
the force F on the handle of the drum, calculate the magnitude of the force supported by
the pin at A. (Answer: 1727 N)

9. The tower for a transmission line is modelled by the truss shown. The crossed members in
the centre sections of the truss may be assumed capable of supporting tension only. For the
loads of 1.8 kN applied in the vertical plane, compute the forces induced in the members
AB, DB and CD. (Answer: 𝐹𝐹𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 = 3.89 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 (compression), 𝐹𝐹𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 = 0, 𝐹𝐹𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 =
0.93 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 (compression))
10. A rigid block A weighs 90 kN, and is supported by three steel members: DC, CE and EF.
What are the approximate horizontal and vertical deflections of pins C and F as a result of
gravity? Take E = 1.93 × 1011 Pa for each of the members. (Answer: 𝛿𝛿𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 = 0.11 mm (left),
𝛿𝛿𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹 = 0.67 mm (down))

11. The axially loaded bar AB, made of a material having modulus of elasticity E, is held
between two rigid supports. The bar has cross-sectional area A1 from A to C, and 1.5A1
from C to B. What is the displacement of point D where the load P acts? What are the
reactions at the supports A and B? (Answer: 𝛿𝛿𝐷𝐷 = 7𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃/40𝐴𝐴1 𝐸𝐸)

12. A composite bar of square cross-section with dimensions 2b × 2b is constructed of two

different materials having moduli of elasticity E1 and E2. Both parts of the bar have the
same cross-sectional dimensions. Assuming that the end plates are rigid, derive a formula
for the eccentricity, e, of the load P, so that each part of the bar is stressed uniformly in
compression. Under this condition, what are the axial forces carried by the two materials?
(Answer: 𝑒𝑒 = 𝑏𝑏(𝐸𝐸2 − 𝐸𝐸1 )/2(𝐸𝐸2 + 𝐸𝐸1 ))
13. Five steel rods, each having a cross-sectional area of 500 mm2, are assembled in a
symmetrical manner. Determine the deflection of joint A due to the downward force P = 2
MN. Assume that the rods are taut initially, and E = 200 GPa. (Answer: 13.3 mm)

mm

14. A stiff beam is hinged at one end and supported by two springs of spring constant k. Where
should a force P be applied so that the spring constant of the system (i.e. P divided by the
deflection under P) is 20/9 k? (Answer: 𝑐𝑐 = 1.5𝑎𝑎)

15. In the structure shown in (a) the member AB is very rigid in comparison to BC. Estimate
the vertical deflection at B when a load of 400 N is supported at B. It is known that when
the 400 N load is supported entirely by BC, as in (b), the deflection at B is 23 mm. (Answer:
59.36 mm)
16. A lightweight rope of cross-sectional area A and modulus of elasticity E is hung over a
stationary shaft. A weight W is attached to the longer end of the rope and, at the same time,
the rope is forced against the shaft with a horizontal force P just sufficient to prevent the
weight from dropping. Find the value of P if the static coefficient of friction between the
rope and the shaft is f. (Answer: 𝑊𝑊𝑒𝑒 −𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋 /𝑓𝑓)
