2. A cantilever beam of varying cross section is shown below. The section is such that its
second moment of area is 2𝐼𝐼 at the fixed end, and linearly decreases to 𝐼𝐼 at the free end.
The beam is subjected to uniformly distributed load of intensity 𝑞𝑞, acting vertically
downward. Determine the slope and deflection at the free end. Assume that the modulus of
elasticity of the material is 𝐸𝐸 and the beam’s length is L. (Answer: 𝛿𝛿 = 𝑞𝑞𝐿𝐿4 /14.3𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸, …)
3. A fixed-fixed beam is loaded as shown in the figure below. Find out the fixed end moments
that develop due to this loading. Also find out the mid-span deflection. Assume constant
flexural rigidity 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸. (Answer: 𝑀𝑀𝐵𝐵 = 23𝑞𝑞𝐿𝐿2 /1536 (clockwise), …)
4. A simply-supported beam 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 supports a uniform load of intensity 𝑞𝑞 over the left-hand half
of the span and a couple 𝑀𝑀0 at the end 𝐵𝐵. The flexural rigidity of the beam is 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸. Determine
the angle of rotation 𝜃𝜃𝐵𝐵 at the end 𝐵𝐵. (Answer: −7𝑞𝑞𝐿𝐿3 /384𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 + 𝑀𝑀0 𝐿𝐿/3𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 (clockwise))
5. A slender curved bar 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 lying in a horizontal plane with its centerline forming a quarter
circle of the radius 𝑅𝑅 is subjected to a vertical load 𝑃𝑃 at the free end 𝐵𝐵. The bar has flexural
rigidity 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 and torsional rigidity 𝐺𝐺𝐼𝐼𝑝𝑝 . Determine the vertical deflection 𝛿𝛿𝑣𝑣 and the angle of
twist 𝜙𝜙 at the end 𝐵𝐵. (Answer: 𝛿𝛿𝑣𝑣 = 𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝑅𝑅3 /4𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 + (3𝜋𝜋 − 8)𝑃𝑃𝑅𝑅3 /4𝐺𝐺𝐼𝐼𝑝𝑝 , …)
6. An inclined steel bar 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴, 2 m long and having a cross-sectional area of 4000 mm2 and
moment of inertia of 8.53 × 106 mm4, is supported as shown below. The inclined steel
hanger 𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 has a cross-section of 600 mm2. Find the downward deflection of the point 𝐶𝐶
due to the vertical force of 2√2 kN. Take 𝐸𝐸 = 200 GPa. (Answer: 0.604 mm)
7. A truss is made of two bars, of same length 𝐿𝐿, same cross-sectional areas 𝐴𝐴, and of the same
material with modulus of elasticity 𝐸𝐸. The joints A, B and C are frictionless pinned joints. Find
out the horizontal and vertical components of the deflection of point C.
8. Determine all the bar forces in the statically indeterminate truss shown below. Assume that
all the bars have the same 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴.
9. Draw the bending moment diagram for the frame shown below. The joints 𝐵𝐵 and 𝐶𝐶 are
rigid joints. The supports 𝐴𝐴 and 𝐷𝐷 are pinned supports. All members have the same length
𝐿𝐿 and same 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸. Neglect the effect of axial and shear forces.
