AMERICAN STRUCTURALISM AND PRISCIAN GRAMMAR

Grammar is the structural foundation of our ability to express ourselves. The more we are
aware of how it works, the more we can monitor the meaning and effectiveness of the way we
and others communicate. It can help us to foster precision, detect ambiguity, and exploit the
richness of expression available in English. These are the reasons why we need to study grammar
and grammatical models.

Like American structuralism, where it is based on the assumption that grammatical

categories should be defined not in terms of meaning but in terms of distribution, and that the
structure of each language should be described without reference to the alleged universality of
such categories as tense, mood and parts of speech.

Then Priscian grammar, which Priscian’s work became the standard work for the
teaching of grammar in the medieval schools and it provided the background for the rise of
speculative grammar in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Therefore, American structuralism and Priscian grammar are two different theories yet
they have similarities where they contributed us on how we should study grammar and why it is
important for us to learn every day.
