 Amazing Butuan (2009). Site of the First Mass after 488 years
controversy continues
Summary
The first mass controversy in 488 years ago Portuguese explorer
Ferdinand Magellan “rediscovered” archipelago in March 1521 and made
history. Little did he know that more 400 years later, two places will
contest the site of the recorded first mass in the Philippines whether it
was held in Limasawa Island Leyte or in Mazzua or Masao in Butuan. Over
the years, it came to a point when the national historical institute, in a
decision handed out a few years black had ruled that the recorded first
mass in the Philippines was indeed in Limasawa Island.
Viewpoint/Argument
The issues sparks when Dr. Gregorio Zaide his daughter, Sonia in several
editions during the 1980’s of their widely-decontaminated history
textbook, insisted that the recorded first mass was held in the Marao,
Butuan and in the process, dismissed the Limarasa claim as erroneous.
Evidence that state to support viewpoint/argument
The said arguments or viewpoint stated that the first was held in
Limasawa Island and the years where the first mass in the Philippines
recorded.

Pangasinan

Philippines in 1324 would have pre dated mass celebrated in 1521 by
Ferdinand Magellan which is generally regarded as the first mass in the
Philippines by some 197 years.
Viewpoint/Argument
Fr. Odorico did not return till the end of 1329 or the beginning of 1330,
but aa regards intermediate dates all that we can reduce from his
narrative.
Evidence that state to support viewpoint/argument
The evidence is that he was in Western after 1321 and that spent three
years in China between opening in 1323 and the close of 1329.
