Intro:

o “This scale helps us understand where we are at with our math! Think
of it as learning how to ride a bike, step one you need help learning
how to ride a bike, step two is taking the training wheels off and
sometimes falling over, and all the up to a three where you know how
to ride a bike, but when you get so good at riding a bike you learn how
to do tricks, you have gotten to step four!”
o
- The teacher will play YouTube: Counting by 5s for students to listen to
- The teacher will ask the students if they can count by fives by themselves
o *Students can volunteer*
- The teacher will ask the students why they think we need to know how to skip
count by fives
o Make a connection: “We need to learn how to count by fives for when
we receive nickels, five-dollar bills, and to help us tell time on a clock!
Think of a time that you could’ve used skip counting by 5s!”
Activity:
- The teacher will hand out the counting by 5’s fill in the blank sheet and do the
first page together and save the rest for independent practice

.
- After the students have done the worksheet together with the teacher, they will
get out their “high five” worksheet and do that independently.
Closing/Game:
- After the students have finished their worksheet, they will get out their
flashcard pieces and cut them out.
- The student will mix them up, so they are not in order
- The directions of the Flash Card Game are:
o “You will flip over a flash card and whatever number you flip; you have
to say the number that comes before and after that number.”
o “For example, if I pulled the number 25, the number that comes before
that is 20 and the number that comes after is 30.”
- After the students have played the game they may go to ABCya counting game
and select the skip counting by 5s to practice their new skill.

MODIFICATION/DIFFERENTIATION:
- Students who want to challenge themselves may continue counting by fives on
their fill in the blank worksheet to see how high they can count
- Students who do not have a printer may create their own worksheet or
manipulatives to practice counting by 5s.
