Sec 2 Simlutaneous Equations Word Problems

This document contains 8 word problems involving simultaneous equations. The problems cover a range of contexts including farms with chickens and pigs, costs of pens and pencils, dimensions of rectangles, speeds and distances traveled, and ages of people. Readers are asked to form simultaneous equations from written descriptions and then solve the equations to find unknown values.

Simultaneous Equations Word Problems

1. In a farm, there are x chickens and y pigs. If the total number of chickens and pigs in the
farm is 71 and the total number of legs is 180,
(a) form two simultaneous equations in x and y.
(b) Solve the equations to find the number of chickens and pigs in the farm.

2. John bought some pens and pencils at a book store. If 5 pens and 3 pencils cost
$8.40 while 5 pencils and 3 pens cost $6 instead, find the cost of a pen and pencil.

3. A rectangle ABCD has sides as shown.

( x  5 y)

5 cm (2 x  3 y )

9 cm

(a) Write down a pair of simultaneous equations using the above information.
(b) Solve the simultaneous equations to find the values of x and y.

4. The sides of a rectangle shown in the figure below are given in centimetres.

A 2x  5 y B

3y x 1

D x  4y  7 C

(a) Write down two equations relating x and y.

(b) Using the two equations formed in part (a), find x and y.
(c) Hence, find the area of the rectangle.

5. There are two numbers. When the second number is subtracted from twice the first
number, the result is 18. When 9 is added to the first number, the result is equal to twice
the second number.
(a) Using x as the first number and y as the second number, write down a pair of
simultaneous equations.
(b) Hence find the numbers x and y.

6. The sum of Anthony and his daughter’s present age is 38. One year ago, Anthony was
eight times as old as his daughter. Given that Anthony’s present age is m and his
daughter’s present age is n,
(a) form two equations involving m and n,
(b) solve these equations to find their present age.

7. Susan drove for 4 hours at an average speed of x km/h and then for 6 hours at an average
speed of y km/h. She drove a total distance of 816 km.
(a) Write down an equation in terms of x and y, and show that it simplifies to
2x + 3y = 408.
(b) Ben drove for 3 hours at an average speed of x km/h and then for 5 hours at an
average speed of y km/h. He drove a total distance of 654 km. Write down an
equation in terms of x and y, to represent this information.
(c) Solve these two equation to find the value of x and y.

8. The perimeter of the below rectangle below is 86 m. If its length is reduced by 4 cm and
the breadth increased by 5 cm, it formed a square. Let x be the length and y be the
breadth of the rectangle.
y

Square Rectangle x
