Argumentative Essay Practice

Topic 1: “Test scores are the only way to judge the competency of a student.”

Students’ academic performance is believed to solely be indicated through test scores.

Nevertheless, this has created a not-so-accurate assessment for students’ abilities as
external factors can influence the final results. Therefore, we also have other elements to
evaluate competency.

Firstly, exam results are considered as the most convincing element to assess students
which explains why most people mistake them for being the only key for evaluation.
Lecturers often rate competency due to the difficulty in the exercises from easy to hard
level. As all types of practical problems are included in the tests, students cannot learn
by heart or guess the answers, which increases the examination’s credibility in giving
factual results. As a result, exam scores are often misinterpreted as the only way to rate
students’ performance. However, they are not always guaranteed being accurate enough
to appraise students’ learning process.

Furthermore, health, luck, internet connections, etc are factors dictating how well
students can accomplish the work. Only when one out of many factors does not remain
perfect will it change the final results significantly. During the pandemic when students
have to take online exams, they might have their marks decreased because of late
submission, poor connection, website crash, ... Apparently, exam scores are not always
precise enough to judge one’s ability.

To achieve a more complete and exact assessment, other scores needs to be appreciated
such as points for homework, quizzes, group assignments, projects, … Unlike the
examination, homework, quizzes and group assignments could show a persistent rate of
competency. These short-term missions could closely demonstrate how students
develop over semesters and indicate a common rate of their learning level. If test scores
put a conclusion to the overall competency, missions’ results play a role in ensuring the
progression and the average points over a long period in detail. They all complement
each other to bring forward the most honest and reasonable assessment. Consequently,
short-term missions’ evaluation is as critical as the exam results.

In conclusion, test scores are not the only way for the final appraisal as they are
dependent on many external factors. To provide the most reliable judgement, missions
and works’ marks also contribute to the end evaluation. Nowadays, students’ average
level are given based on scores from homework, tests, quizzes, … with certain
percentages.

Topic 2: “Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but
those giving more.” (H. Jackson Brown, Jr.)

The author of the well-known book ‘Life’ s Little Instruction Book’, H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
believes that happiness is not receiving more but sharing more. Theoretically, this is an
inspirational quote; nonetheless, sharing only, without receiving, cannot bring you
happiness.

Sharing is an essential way towards happiness. Only when people share do they deeply
understand each other, creating a united and well-organized community. Study by
Nathaniel Lambert at Brigham Young University addressed that people are happier
when they talk and share: “Sharing our joy increases joy.” Records showed that 35
million U.S adults participated in Giving Tuesday campaign making the donation
surpassed $2.7 billion in 2021. Therefore, sharing, undoubtedly, brings us pleasure and
many people believe so.

On the other hand, sharing is not the only way to achieve happiness but also receiving.
Assuming a kid is raised in the embrace of both father and mother, he is showered with
love which later builds up a loving characteristic and the act of sharing, what his parents
did when he was young, because he realized he is happy when being loved. Receiving is
critical for adults as well as toddlers. When you are busy giving away but not demanding
anything back, you are likely to be taken advantage of by evil and this will bring you
nothing but unfairness. People instinctively love receiving empathy and sharing. When
they are isolated from these things, they are likely to get mental sickness such as
depression, bipolar disorder and DID. Survey in February 2022 conducted by Statista in
Sweden indicated that 51% of all genders from 18 to 80 are happy getting presents at
Christmas. If sharing is something you can practice, receiving is something belonging to
instinct which explains why human beings have always asked for love and respect since
birth till death. Receiving is often misinterpreted as being selfish but it is not. People
only receive when they know how to share; for example, lecturers give students
knowledge and receive gratitude from them. Sharing and receiving is a two-sided
relationship while happiness is the fruit of it.

In conclusion, giving more is not always the best key to happiness and so is getting
more. To achieve contentment, people need to balance between giving and getting
because they complement each other to create delight in each person and a civilized
society.
