Conceptual Framework and Significance of The Study

This document discusses a study that aims to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of an asphalt mix modified with polyethylene terephthalate as a binder additive and crumb rubber tire and lahar sand as fine aggregate replacements. The study will involve mixing these materials into an asphalt mix and testing the mix according to ASTM standards and Marshall Design Criteria. The results of the study could help promote more sustainable road construction and benefit the environment, researchers, the pavement construction industry, and the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Modified Asphalt Mix: Polyethylene Terephthalate as Binder Additive and Crumb

Rubber Tire and Lahar Sand as Fine Aggregates Replacement

--- To determine the physical properties of the Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), crumb
rubber tire and lahar sand as partial substitute to asphalt mix
--- To analyze the effect of the crumb rubber tire, Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and
lahar sand in the mechanical properties of asphalt mix.
Significance of the Study

This research aims to investigate and evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of the

designed modified asphalt mix with the application of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as a

binder additive and crumb rubber tire and lahar sand as fine aggregate replacements based on

the ASTM standard and Marshall Design Criteria for Heavy Traffic. If the results show effectivity,

a successful revolution towards the greater good will be expected, especially to benefit these

different groups and individuals of society, such as:

 The Environment. Utilizing these waste materials for road construction is a sustainable

method that will help decrease environmental concerns that contaminate both land and

water. Therefore, the findings of this paper will help promote sustainable road

infrastructure and provide an opportunity for the future improvement of the performance

of flexible pavement not just here in the Philippines but also elsewhere around the globe.

 The Researchers. The results of the study will be of great assistance and reference for

providing additional information to other researchers who are either civil engineers or

civil engineering students who want to broaden their knowledge in terms of feasible

design for sustainable road construction. Furthermore, since research studies should be

expanded, this will encourage other researchers to explore other related ideas to devise

new ways to maximize the properties of what these materials are exhibiting or to

discover other materials with potential qualities to help contribute to the quality of the

road’s improvement while alleviating existing problems in society.

 The Pavement Construction Industry. The accumulated information from this study

will help reduce the cost of asphalt pavement construction using the modified mix with

the use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), crumb rubber tire (CRT), and lahar sand. It

will also aid in the development of innovative, cost-effective, and environmentally

sustainable road-building materials for the road construction industry.

 The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). This research, which aims

at the development of more sustainable road infrastructure using waste materials, will

benefit the department for the betterment of using economically designed road works

while securing the lives of road users in the country.

Feedback
The concept outline for this study begins with the input section. It comprises knowledge,

material, and specification requirements that enable the researchers to derive the complete idea

regarding the study, including the materials needed and the specifications to be used to

understand the whole process before proceeding with the production and analysis of the

designed asphalt mix—the process section of the conceptual framework. This part is

incomparable to the first section, where most of the brainstorming happens since it is mostly

about the flow of activities to be performed by the researchers for the production of a mixed

design that undergoes several tests to meet the required specifications of the study. And for the

last section, the output of the research which demonstrates the outcome of the tests conducted

on modified asphalt pavement mix from the mixture of polyethylene terephthalate as binder

additive, and crumb rubber tire and lahar sand as a partial substitute for fine aggregate, which

was evaluated based on ASTM standard and the Marshall Design Criteria for Heavy Traffic
