01 CE134P-2 Introduction To Structural Steel Design

The document discusses steel structures and construction. It describes the differences between hot rolled and cold rolled steel, which is mainly the process - hot rolling involves heat while cold rolling is at or near room temperature. Hot rolled steel has a scaly surface and slightly rounded edges, while cold rolled is very smooth with sharp edges. The document also outlines some merits of steel construction like strength, durability, speed of erection and recyclability, as well as demerits like high initial cost and susceptibility to corrosion. It mentions specifications like the National Structural Code of the Philippines and describes types of loads on structures.

Hot rolled steel comes with a scaly surface,

slightly rounded edges and corners and the
surface is non-oily. Cold rolled steel has an
oily or greasy finish, very smooth surface,
and very sharp edges.

It's important to note that the main difference

between hot rolled and cold rolled steel is one
of process. “Hot rolling” refers to processing
done with heat. “Cold rolling” refers to processes
done at or near room temperature.
