What was the disaster? When and where did it occur? Hurricane Maria occurred in
September 2017. It occurred in Dominica, Saint Croix, and Puerto Rico.
What did people do? People hid as much as possible and tried to survive the strong
winds of the hurricane which lasted for several hours.
What kind of damage did the event cause? Hurricane Maria resulted in about $90
billion in damage, making it the third costliest hurricane in U.S. history. In December,
Puerto Rico was hit by a sequence of seismic events that triggered multiple strong
earthquakes that brought down hundreds of homes and schools in January.
What happened after the disaster? Include any other types of information that
you consider relevant about the topic.
Five years after Hurricane Maria, thousands of Puerto Rico’s residents are still
recovering from the storm, although power has been restored and access to clean water
has greatly improved, Puerto Ricans are still recovering from the destruction and trauma
of the hurricane.
Day-long power outages still happen from time to time, especially in rural areas. Some
homes still have tarps instead of roofs. Collapsed utility poles and uprooted trees are
common. The continued challenges have driven hundreds of thousands of Puerto
Ricans from the island entirely
