It notes that while face-to-face classes have resumed in some areas, some local government units lack the capacity and resources to do so safely. It argues that the national government should provide support to these local governments to help launch face-to-face classes, while also ensuring student and teacher safety through health protocols. To resume or to come to an

end
by Xaica Jane Labiaga

In accordance with the order from Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor
Briones and with the concurrence of President Rodrigo Duterte, the continuation of face-to-face
classes in Level 2 areas had resumed. Noting that face-to-face classes now resumes, this is
now what comes into question: Are the government and respective Local Government Units
(LGU) capable and prepared enough to support face-to-face classes amidst this public health
emergency?

Last November 2021, the National Government launched the pediatric vaccination between
17 years old and below, and 12 years old and below last February 2022. In regard with this, the
National Government decided to continue face-to-face in some regions of the country. Some
desolated areas continued but some didn't since their LGU's complain that they do not have the
capacity to launch face-to-face classes given their meager resources. With this, there is a need
to address the fact that some LGU’s need help from the National Government.

According to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, some areas in the country still haven't launched
face-to-face classes in their respective areas because some local government units doesn’t
have the capacity to launch this essential aspect of formal education. The national government
must help with the aid to launch face-to-face classes with the respective LGU’s. We also need to
address the fact that some students are not capable enough to actually search for new
knowledge on the internet. They still need guidance from their teachers which can only happen
when face -to-face classes resumes.

Some students and parents have already addressed the need to continue face-to-face
classes since it’s too hard for them to self-study and self-learn. I also believed that if this will
continue, the students’ education will be defective and the idea of formal education will be
deteriorated, not only on students but also on the teacher’s skills. But with the presence of the
fatal virus, things will be hard to continue as what it is. Would we risk the life of our students
when they are our future? Probably not.

The National Government must help the local government units who are struggling to
resume face-to-face classes. DepEd, together with the whole of government should educate the
students regarding health and safety protocols to avoid the deadly virus contaminating them.
Students are our future so we should protect their health and safety knowing that the dangerous
virus is lurking around us. We should be attentive enough to protect our students’ safety and
knowledge. The
global pandemic reminds us: global crisis requires global solutions. We should act as one in
order to overcome these obstacles for the society and the students’ future.
