Have you ever worked for a charity as a volunteer? Many people have, and most would
say that it is a highly rewarding experience that provides a feeling both of satisfaction
and usefulness. There is a strong tradition of volunteering in many countries by people
of all ages but the amount of time they dedicate to this aim often depends on how old
they are. Younger people are full of energy but some older volunteers can suffer from
afflictions prevent them from doing this work full time. Volunteering can take many
forms, from helping out in a care home for the elderly in your local town, to being sent
abroad
on a posting that can last a year or two.
Unfortunately in recent years, charities have noticed a drop in the number of people
willing to participate in charity work. Economic crises could partly be to blame for this
decrease, but what also puts potential volunteers off is seeing organisations being run
more like businesses. This seems to conflict with the mission of such organisations,
which were originally founded to provide assistance to those in need and not to make
money and minimise costs. Whatever the reason, it looks as if it is going to be hard to
reverse this trend and encourage more people to become volunteers.
Charities also raise money for good causes: helping sick or homeless people. They have a
lot of donors, but their attitude has also changed over the years. Why? One reason may
be that people are suffering from charity fatigue, that is they are tired of being
bombarded constantly with requests for donations to worthy causes. After a while, it
becomes impossible to choose, and rather than decide on one charity only, people may
give up donating altogether. Another reason might be that charities have become much
more aggressive in their marketing strategies, and the pressure to give can have the
opposite effect. Whatever the reason, it looks as if it is going to be hard to reverse this
trend and encourage more people to donate money to someone in need or just become
volunteers. Maybe it’s time to change this and help revive interest in the rewarding
work
of volunteers?

24. Read the text. Match the paragraphs (1-5) with the headings (a-f).
There is one heading you do not need to use.
1__ Examples of past changes to our climate can be found all around us, sometimes in
places we least expect to see them. This is true on the beaches of western Wales, where
recent storms have revealed surprising evidence of a rise in the sea level. The discovery
is being called the ‘Atlantis of Wales’.
2__ To see the remnants of the ancient world now, you need to go walking on the
beaches at low tide, when as much as possible is visible. There you will see hundreds of
tree stumps sticking up out of the sand. This is what is left of a former forest that was
flooded by the sea over 3000 years ago, and gives a picture of what life used to be like in
those times.
3__ Scientists have identified a dozen different species of tree and have even made
discoveries that prove the area was actually lived in by local tribes. There are stones that
have been blackened by fire, as well as wooden constructions probably used when the
water level began rising.

4__ There are old legends that tell of the land beyond what is now the coastline where
two princes were supposed to guard the sea wall and prevent the sea from flooding the
land. They fell out and as they quarrelled, the sea broke through and submerged their
lands. It is a classic legend, but of course we have no way today of proving whether any
of it is true.
5__ Whether or not there is any truth in the legend, it still provides inspiration for the
writers and artists of today. Short stories have been written describing the adventures of
the princes, and local artists have worked together to recreate scenes from life as it used
to be. This is used with local schoolchildren to teach them both about the past and the
need to protect our natural environment.
