REQUIREMENTS
3. 1 General. - The following paragraphs delineate the r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r design, fabrication, a s s e m b l y , and performance f o r Boilerplate Number 26. Systems and subsystems development plan philosophy is reflected i n SID 62-223, Apollo P r o g r a m Plan. 3. 1. 1 Weight. - Weight, c e n t e r of gravity, and moments of i n e r t i a data f o r Boilerplate Number 26 shall be presented i n Specification SID 63-143. 3. 1. 2 Materials. and load criteria.
3. 1. 2. 1 Fabrication. - S t r u c t u r a l design concepts of Boilerplate Number 26 emphasize employment of proven manufacturing techniques and methods to the g r e a t e s t possible extent. Maximum u s e shall b e m a d e of developed "off -the - shelf' I components fabricated by dependable m a n u f a c t u r e r s
3. 1. 3 Design C r i t e r i a . - Design c r i t e r i a shall b e i n accordance with rational design principles a s specified i n Specification SID 63-313. 3. 1. 3. 1 Electromagnetic Interference. - Electromagnetic i n t e r f e r e n c e control shall be i n accordance with Specification SID MC 999-0002.
3. 1. 3. 2 Environment. The envi;onmental design c r i t e r i a f o r Boilerplate Number 26 shall be a s specified i n Specification SID 63-313.
3. 1. 3. 3 Checkout Provisions. - Boilerplate Number 26 shall be designed with provisions f o r s y s t e m and integrated s y s t e m checkout and t e s t capabilities. 3. 1. 4 Interchangeability. - Interchangeability a s defined f o r the Apollo P r o g r a m shall be i n a c c o r d a n c e with Specification MIL-1-8500 and shall apply to all completely finished a s s e m b l i e s , components, and p a r t s which shall be capable of being readily installed, removed, o r replaced without alternation, misalignment, o r damage to p a r t s being installed o r to adjoining parts. No fabrication operations, such a s cutting, filing, drilling, reaming, h a m m e r i n g , bending, prying, o r forcing, shall be required for installation.

3. 1. 4. 1 Interchangeability of Electronic Equipment. Interchangeability of electronic equipment shall be in a c c o r d a n c e with Specification MIL-E-5400, w h e r e applicable. Interchangeability of electronic equipment f o r the Apollo P r o g r a m shall r e q u i r e that mechanical and e l e c t r i c a l interchangeability s h a l l e x i s t between like a s s e m b l i e s , s u b a s s e m b l i e s, and replaceable p a r t s be e a s i l y effected without physical o r e l e c t r i c a l modification to any p a r t of the equipment, including ; cabling , wiring, and mounting and without r e s o r t i n g to selection; however, adjustment, t r i m m i n g , o r calibration m a y be made. 3. 1. 5 Replaceability. - Replaceability, a s defined f o r the Apollo P r o g r a m , shall be i n a c c o r d a n c e with Specification MIL-1-8500 and s h a l l apply to p a r t s which m a y r e q u i r e additional work o r operations during installation. This may include such additional operations a s drilling, reaming, cutting, filing, t r i m m i n g , shimming, o r o t h e r m e a n s , n o r m a l l y a s s o c i a t e d with installing the original a s s e m b l y into the end item. Replaceable p a r t s shall be designed to p e r m i t replacement under field maintenance conditions. 3. 1. 6 Finish. B14-000024.

Lubrication shall not c a u s e any toxic o r flammable substances to o c c u r i n the CM o r i n the errvironlr-erztal c nnt 1-01system.
3. 1. 10 Reliability. - An integrated reliability p r o g r a m , generally i n a c c o r d a n c e with Specification MIL-R-27542 , shall be conducted throughout the design, development, and fabrication, and checkout and acceptance of Boilerplate Number 2 6 .

3. 2. 1. 3 Tower J e t t i s o n Motor. - The tower jettison m o t o r shall be a solid propellant motor 55. 6 inches i n length and 26 inches i n diameter. The m o t o r shall have two fixed t h r u s t nozzles canted 30 d e g r e e s f r o m the m e a n m o t o r centerline. The resultant t h r u s t a x i s shall be located 2. 5 d e g r e e s plus o r minus 30 minutes f r o m the m e a n m o t o r centerline of the pitch plane. The jettison motor shall weigh approximately 534 pounds, which includes the interstage s t r u c t u r e , s h a l l develop 33,000 pounds of t h r u s t and shall f i r e f o r 1. 2 seconds. The rocket m o t o r shall b e ignited by a pyrogen type igniter which shall utilize two hotwire initiators.

It shall be 183 inches in length and 26 inches in d i a m e t e r and shall provide interstage s t r u c t u r e between the LES j ettison motor and s t r u c t u r a l skirt. 3.2.1.5 Structural Skirt. A s t r u c t u r a l s k i r t a s s e m b l y shall be utilized to mount the launch e s c a p e motor to the tower. The s k i r t shall be constructed of a forged ring with longerons, welded to a shear skin, that shall t r a n s f e r uniform load f r o m the launch escape motor to four points a t the launch e s c a p e tower legs. The s t r u c t u r a l s k i r t shall be bolted to the LES tower. 3.2.1.6 Launch E s c a p e Tower. The launch e s c a p e tower shall be a four-legged welded tubular alloy, truncated rectangular cross-sectioned p y r a m i d , 120 inches in length with a b a s e 46 inches by 50 inches. The tower shall f o r m the intermediate s t r u c t u r e between the CM and the launch e s c a p e m o t o r . At the bottom of the tower, quick-release m e c h a n i s m s shall be incorporated t o attach the tower to the CM inner structure. The tower s t r u c t u r e shall be covered with ablative m a t e r i a l , Buna-N r u b b e r sixty p e r cent s i l i c a filled. 3 . 2. 1. 8. 2 LES E l e c t r i c a l Wiring H a r n e s s . Redundant wiring h a r n e s s e s shall be bonded t o the e x t e r i o r of the launch e s c a p e m o t o r and a s s o c i a t e d redundant h a r n e s s e s shall be i n t e g r a l to the tower s t r u c t u r e . The wiring h a r n e s s e s shall provide the m e a n s of connecting the rocket m o t o r and s e p a r a t i o n c i r c u i t s with the sequence c o n t r o l l e r s and the instrumentation components with the communications equipment. Each tower s t r u c t u r e h a r n e s s shall have a breakaway type plug that shall p e r m i t the h a r n e s s to be detached, at the separation plane, when the launch e s c a p e tower i s jettisoned.
3. 2. 1. 8. 3 Hotwire Initiators. - The hotwire i n i t i a t o r s contain two e l e c t r i c a l high r e s i s t a n t w i r e s t h r e a d e d into pyrotechnic c a r t r i d g e s which f i r e the i g n i t e r of the rocket motor. The i n i t i a t o r s shall be redundant f o r i n c r e a s e d reliability. The hotwire firing units s h a l l be 3 . 2. 1. 8. 4 Hotwire F i r i n g Units. pyrotechnic c a r t r i d g e s which shall be detonated by c u r r e n t passing through the high r e s i s t a n t e l e c t r i c a l hotwire initiators. The pyrotechnic c a r t r i d g e s shall then fire the rocket m o t o r i g n i t e r s . 3. 2. 1. 8. 5 Pyrotechnic B a t t e r i e s . - The pyrotechnic b a t t e r i e s f o r the LES shall be housed i n the CM. E l e c t r i c a l wiring s h a l l provide the m e a n s by which c u r r e n t will be c a r r i e d f r o m the b a t t e r i e s to the pyrotechnic firing units.
3 . 2. 1. 9 Umbilical System. - The umbilical s y s t e m shall contain e l e c t r i c a l wiring between the CM and LES. The umbilical shall be detached by s t r a i n on the lanyard type disconnect when the LES j e t t i s o n m o t o r c a u s e s CM-LES separation. 3 . 2. 1. 10 Pyrotechnic System. the following:

( b ) Hotwire i n i t i a t o r s ( c ) Disconnect a s s e m b l i e s . 3.2. 1. 11 LES Tower Separation System. - The LES tower s e p a r a t i o n s y s t e m shall c o n s i s t of explosive bolts, u s e d f o r LES t o w e r - CM attachment, and flexible l i n e a r shaped explosive c h a r g e s placed beneath the four attachment explosive boltheads that s e c c r e the tower to the CM.

Redundant hotwire initiators shall be u s e d to detonate the explosive bolts and flexible l i n e a r shaped explosive charges. The hotwire i n i t i a t o r s shall b e actuated by 28 volt dc signals which shall be received f r o m the redundant L E S tower separation sequencer. To accomplish LES tower jettison, the tower separation sequencer will simultaneously: apply detonation signals t o the explosive bolt initiators and the tower jettison m o t o r firing units. The LES a s s e m b l y will be r e l e a s e d and propelled c l e a r of the boilerplate trajectory.

3.2.2. 1 . 2 F o r w a r d Bulkhead and E g r e s s Tube- - The f o r w a r d bulkhead s t r u c t u r e shall c o n s i s t of a double skin with riveted stiffeners. The closeout skin s h a l l be attached to s t i f f e n e r s by blind f a s t e n e r s . The e g r e s s tube s h a l l consfst of a welded sheet tube of aluminum welded to the f o r w a r d bulkhead. A c o v e r plate shall be bolted t o t h e top of the e g r e s s tube. 3.2.2. 1 . 3 F o r w a r d Crew Compartment. - The f o r w a r d c r e w compartment shall consist of m u l t i - s t i f f e n e r s welded to the o u t e r skin. The s t i f f e n e r s shall consist of four m a i n longerons attached to the launch e s c a p e tower fittings i n the f o r w a r d bulkhead and t e r m i n a t e i n the m i d - r i n g splice joint at the aft end of the f o r w a r d section of the c r e w compartment. S e v e r a l secondary longerons s h a l l be utilized f o r load t r a n s f e r f r o m the f o r w a r d bulkhead to the mid-ring. The remaining s t i f f e n e r s s h a l l a s s i s t the skin in resisting airloads. 3. 2. 2. 1. 4 A f t Crew Compartment. - The aft section of the c r e w compartment shall consist of a sidewall with s t i f f e n e r s , corresponding to those of the f o r w a r d section of the c r e w c o m p a r t m e n t , f r o m the mating aft section of the c r e w compartment m i d - r i n g to the machined ring forging at the junction of the sidewall and the floor. 3. 2. 2. 1. 4. 1 Aft Heat Shield. - A 15 inch d i a m e t e r hole, with reinforcement as n e c e s s a r y , shall b e added to the aft heat shield to provide a c c e s s to the micro-meteoroid pyrotechnic t i e point. A 15 inch hole shall a l s o be added to the aft bulkhead. A doubler, door, and s e a l shall b e included. 3.2.2. 1 . 5 Apex F o r w a r d Compartment Heat Shield Cover. - The a p e x f o r w a r d compartment heat shield cover s t r u c t u r e shall f o r m the f o r w a r d section of the CM s t r u c t u r e and shall c o n s i s t of a n aluminum alloy skin and stiffeners utilizing riveted and bolted construction. A lightweight i n n e r skin s h a l l be u s e d to i n s u r e a smooth s u r f a c e . The nose cone will be aluminum. 3. 2. 2. 1. 5. 1 CM Insulation. - The CM e x t e r i o r s h a l l be provided with suitable c o r k insulation to p r o t e c t the module f r o m aerodynamic heating during the launch phase. 3.2.2. 1 . 6 A c c e s s Hatch. - The m a i n hatch shall provide a c c e s s to the CM i n t e r i o r . The hatch shall be constructed of r e i n f o r c e d aluminum plate and shall be bolted into place. It shall be located i n t h e CM sidewall o v e r the head of the c e n t e r couch position.

4. 1 General Quality A s s u r a n c e Provisions. The principal c o n t r a c t o r (S&ID) shall be responsible f o r the p e r f o r m a n c e of all inspection r e q u i r e m e n t s a s specified h e r e i n . Except a s otherwise specified, the p r i n c i p a l c o n t r a c t o r m a y utilize his own o r any o t h e r inspection facilities and s e r v i c e s acceptable to the NASA. Inspection r e c o r d s of the examinations and t e s t s shall be kept complete and available to the NASA as specified i n t h e contract.
4. 2 P r i n c i p a l C o n t r a c t o r ' s Quality A s s u r a n c e P r o g r a m . The data shall be u s e d i n qualitative and quantitive a s s e s s m e n t s of reliability and p e r f o r m a n c e of each s y s t e m , and of the ultimate spacecraft. T h i s data, together with o t h e r a p p r o p r i a t e data, such a s acceptance data, shall be integrated with that accumulated f r o m p r i o r t e s t s to f o r m a s s e s s m e n t s . Thus, a probability of s u c c e s s m a y be provided f o r any given phase of the mission.
