Activity Sheets & Summative Test

This document provides a series of activities to introduce students to research concepts. Activity 1 asks students to compare and contrast research and scientific research using a Venn diagram. It also asks for examples of how research is used locally and the role of theory in scientific research. Activity 2 involves filling out a graphic organizer on the types and characteristics of scientific research. Activity 3 asks students to describe the steps of the research process using a pattern fan. Activity 4 discusses defining and formulating a research problem using a discussion web. Activity 5 provides components to formulate a research problem, including the researcher, process, factors, groups, expected changes, and importance. Activity 6 introduces the concept of hypotheses in a matrix.

Activity 5

Formulating a Research Problem

This activity summarizes the components of a research problem.

Who is studying this research problem? ___________________

1. What process will you study? (Ex.: reading, writing, translating, problem solving, scientific method, word
choice, community problem etc.)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

2. What sub-process or part of the process will you focus on? (Ex.: word recognition (part of reading), word
choice (part of writing), sentence reordering (part of translation), current problem (pandemic) etc.)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

3. Which factors affect this sub-process? What makes it more frequent or more error prone or more
variable? There may be several of these factors. Cite the two factors that you want to study.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

4. Who do you want to observe carrying out this sub-process? You might want to compare two different
groups of people: which groups and why?

_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

5. What kind of changes do you think will happen? How will the sub-process or its outcomes be different?
(Ex.: slower, faster, more difficult, less accurate, more variable, etc.)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

6. Why bother studying this? Why is this problem important? Who should care about this problem and why?
Be as specific as possible.

Activity 7

Hypothesis Writing Practice

Forming a hypothesis is the second step of the scientific inquiry process. A hypothesis is a possible
explanation for observations or an educated guess about what you think will happen in your experiment.

How do I write a hypothesis?

• If, then or If, then statement
• Testable and measurable
• Be able to be proven true, partially true, or false.
• A scientist can design and conduct an experiment to prove or disprove the hypothesis.

Write your hypotheses to these scientific questions. Remember, you are only being graded on if you wrote
your hypothesis correctly (the four guidelines above) not if your answer to the questions is correct.

A. 1). Question: What amount of sunlight makes a daisy grow best?

Hypothesis:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

2). Question: Which size of the rock is best for skipping?

Hypothesis:
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

3). Question: Do sugar and salt at the same rate?

Hypothesis:
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

4). Question: How long can milk be left out of the fridge before it goes bad?

Hypothesis:

B. Write your hypothesis/es based on the problem that you state in Activity 5.
