Hello! It’s nice to be with you again my dear learner. Hope you
have familiarized already the Reading, Writing and Comparing
Integers. The lesson that you will take up this time is just a
continuation of your previous lesson. But this time, you will study
and learn how to write integers in increasing or decreasing order.

Let’s Learn This

This learning module deals on Arranging Integers in Increasing


or Decreasing Order. Just take time and enjoy answering the given
exercises.
So, as you go through the activities, it is expected that you will
be able to:
 Identify the smallest and the greatest integer
 Write and arrange integers in ascending or descending
order

Ordering Integers

Manny has a list of numbers.

+7, -1, +10, +8, 0, +3, -6, +1, -5, -9

He wants to put the numbers in order, beginning with the
smallest. How should Manny arrange them?
Signed numbers like those on Manny’s list can be positioned
and ordered on a number line. The number line can be helpful in
ordering signed numbers.

Ascending

-13 -12 -11 -10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 +1 +2 +3 +4 +5 +6 +7 +8 +9 +10 +11 +12 +13

Descending

Any number to the right of 0 is always greater than that to its


left. Therefore, any two numbers on the line, the smallest will always
be to the left of the larger. Inversely, the number to the right of
another always names a number of greater value.

Example:

1.) Find +5 and +6 on the number line.


+6 is to the right of +5; therefore, +6 is greater than +5 or
+6 > +5. Also, +5 is less than +6 or +5 < +6.

2.) Find -8 and -9.


-8 is to the right of -9; therefore, -8 is greater than -9 or
-8 > -9. Also, -9 is less than -8 or -9 < -8.

3.) Find -2 and 0.


0 is to the right of -2; therefore, 0 is greater than -2 or
0 > -2. Also, -2 is less than 0 or -2 < 0.

Looking at the number line, Manny sees that the smallest
number on hid list is -9 and the largest is +10. He also sees that 0
appears near the middle of the list.

-9 . . . . . . 0 . . . . . . . . +10

Using the numbers line as a guide, Manny arranges the


numbers in order as follows:

-9, -6, -5, -1, 0, +1, +3, +7, +8, +10

Suppose Manny wanted to add the numbers -11 and +6 to his


list, how would Manny’s list look like?

Answer:

-11, -9, -6, -5, -1, 0, +1, +3, +6, +7, +8, +10

Look at the other example:

A. Arrange -4, +3, -1 and -7 in ascending order. Ascending order


is arranging numbers from the smallest to the largest.
Therefore, the numbers in ascending order are -7, -4, -1, and
+3.
B. Arrange -5, -3, +6, +8, and 0 in descending order. Descending
order is arranging numbers from the largest to the smallest.
Therefore, the numbers in descending order are +8, +6, 0, -3,
and -5.

• On a number line, any number is bigger than all the


numbers to its left.
• The numbers get smaller as you move to the left on
the number line.
• Ascending means going up starts with the smallest
to the largest.
• Descending order starts with the largest and goes
down to the smallest.
