Overhead Crane

This document provides guidelines for preparing a crane runway for erection, including: 1. Checking dimensions and clearances of the crane runway and ensuring surfaces are free of debris. 2. Comparing rail widths and dimensions to the crane wheels and end carriages. 3. Ensuring runway meets tolerance specifications outlined in the document for alignment, smoothness, and other parameters.

4 Preparing for erection

4.3 Checking crane runway - overhead travelling crane

· Check the dimensions and clearance of the runway, see sketches.

· Compare the rail width of the crane runway with the wheel width/guide roller setting.
(See Tab. 1 page 17).
· Fit stable end stops to the ends of the crane runway.
· The front edges of the crane runway end stops must be flush with each other and be
at right-angles to the crane runway, see Fig. 4, dimension F.
· Ensure that the running surfaces are free of oil, grease, paint or other dirt.
· The crane runway must comply with the requirements of ISO 12488-1, tolerance
class 2.
· Ensure that the junctions in the crane rails are even, if necessary grind down.

Fig. 4

max F = ± 10 mm

Tolerance A
of track gauge S of crane rails in relation to rail centre and crane runway length.

Enter A in mm, S in m

S ≤ 16 m: A = ± 5 mm
Smax = S + A S > 16 m: A = ± [5 + 0.25 (S - 16)];Amax = ± 15 mm
Smin = S - A.

Tolerance B
of lateral linearity of rail head in relation to cane runway length (position of rail in horizon-
tal projection/top view).

B = ± 10 mm

Tolerance b
of lateral linearity in relation to 2000 mm gauged length (interaxis) at each point of crane
runway.

b = 1 mm

Tolerance C
of linearity in relation to vertical position of rail centre and crane runway length (declivity).

C = ± 10 mm

Tolerance c
of linearity in relation to 2000 mm gauged length (interaxis) at each point of rail head.

c = 2 mm

Tolerance E
of vertical position in relation to opposing measuring points at right angles at each point
of crane runway (cross slope).

Crane: E = ± 1 ‰ • S [mm] Crab: S ≤ 2m: E = ± 4,2 mm

Emax = ± 10 mm S > 2m: E = ± 2 ‰ • S [mm]
Emax = ± 8 mm

Tolerance G
of angularity in relation to crane rail cross-section at each point of runway with angularity
symbol Ð.

G≤±6‰

Tolerance Dhr
of height in relation to the wheel contact points at every point of the runway.

Enter S in m.

Crane: Dhr = 1.0x max (S, e) Crab: Dhr = 2.0 mm if S ≤ 2 m

Dhr_max = 10 mm Dhr = 1.0 • S if S > 2 m
Dhr_max = 4 mm

Tolerance K
of parallelism of crane runway rail to web at each point of runway.

K = ± 1/2 • tmin

NOTICE
Danger of material damage
Ensure that the crane runs smoothly over the whole runway without jamming or increased
friction at the wheel flanges.

4.4 Checking crane runway - underhung crane

· Check the dimensions and clearance of the runway, see sketches.
· Compare the flange width of the crane runway with the wheel width/guide roller
setting or flange width set on the endcarriages. See Tab. 2 page 17. Fit stable end
stops to the ends of the crane runway.
· The front edges of the crane runway end stops must be flush with each other and be
at right-angles to the crane runway, see Fig. 5, dimension F.
· Ensure that the running surfaces are free of oil, grease, paint or other dirt.
· Ensure that the junctions in the crane runway are even, if necessary grind down.
