Master Calculation

1. The document provides design criteria for installing a 4" pipeline using horizontal directional drilling with a 300m radius of curvature under a river. Stress analyses were performed to ensure the pipeline would be safe under installation loads, hydrotesting, and operational pressures and loads. 2. Calculations show the maximum longitudinal stress during installation and the maximum equivalent stress during hydrotesting and operation are well below the allowable stress for the Grade 42 steel pipe. 3. The minimum allowable radius of curvature and maximum span between supports were calculated to be greater than the proposed 300m radius and 20m support spacing, confirming the design is safe.

So, the maximum overhang of the pipe at the last support can be 18.49 m The last overhang is planned at 10 metres, hence safe.

Calculation of Spanning Stress: Axial spanning stress, when the pipe is empty, is given by

Axial spanning stress, when the pipe is filled with water, is given by

5. COATING STRESSES:The maximum shear stress in the pipeline coating during installation depends upon the relative

movement of the pipeline and the surrounding soil. Using bentonite mud, the low-friction soil-coating interface will be at a minumum.
Coating failure check:
