Anisha: We will discuss the background of the study, the statement of the
problem, some parts of the significance of the study, and the scope and
limitations.

Bettina: *read heading* Social media has been one of the things that has
defined the current generation. It is a tool used to build relationships, connect
and keep up with the world, engage with others, gain knowledge, and improve
social lives. Lately, social media is used as a platform to portray a side of oneself
that an individual wants others to see. It seems that it has to be all about living a
fantasy rather than a reality.
Lexie: According to Clarissa Silva, in her article “Social Media’s Impact on Self-
Esteem”, social media has created a paradox effect which is creating the illusion
of having more social engagement, social capital, and popularity, but masking
one’s persona. The persona that one portrays on social media is one that
constantly seeks validation through electronic likes rather than life.
Katrina: According to Silva, social media has been linked to high levels of
anxiety, envy, loneliness, depression, narcissism, and decreased social skills. It
has been observed from the changing behavior of the human beings that social
media has many negative repercussions on people. S networking sites
encourage people to make social comparisons which increase the psychological
distress of individuals which lowers the self-esteem of a person.
SLIDE 5:
Lowysa: *read heading and text* This study is important because it will help
society understand the impact as well as the relationship between social media
and self-esteem. The researchers hope that the findings of this study will help
those who are greatly affected by social media, especially in understanding how
it can damage self-esteem and cause other mental health issues.
SLIDE 6:
Eriane: *read heading* This study will cover the perspectives of Assumption
Iloilo, specifically the Grade 10 students, regarding the negative impact social
media has on self-esteem. The questions will be given to Grade 10 students
since students in the lower levels might not be able to answer correctly. The
social media sites and apps to be focused on will be Facebook, Instagram, and
Twitter. These social media will be chosen because they are the most commonly
used by young people today. Data will be gathered from students using the
interview method. Due to constraints induced by the pandemic, the researchers
will not be able to meet up with the respondents in person and will have to use
online applications such as Zoom or Google Meet in order to meet with said
students virtually. Another limitation of the study is the possibility of internet
connectivity issues occurring in the middle of interviews with the students
participating.

Katrina: *read heading* The qualitative research design was used in this study.
Furthermore, the specific approach for inquiry is phenomenology. The
phenomenological approach is suitable for this study because the data gathered
and used will focus on the negative impact of social media has on self-esteem
based on experiences by several individuals regarding said phenomenon. An
individual semi-structured interview will be conducted with each respondent in
order to learn more about what their perceptions are on the social media
phenomenon in regards with self-esteem.
SLIDE 12:
Bettina: *read heading* The participants of the study will be taken from the
population of students in Assumption Iloilo; specifically, from the students in the
Grade 10 level for SY 2020-2021. The total population of the Grade 10 students
in Assumption Iloilo is 141. It is impractical and time-consuming to question the
entire Grade 10 population; thus, the researchers will be interviewing ten
respondents of the population.
SLIDE 13:
SLIDE 14:
Eriane: *read heading* The students of Grade 10 will be asked to refer to the
researchers a few number of people in their grade level who have experienced
having low self-esteem due to social media. Then, out of the referred learners,
ten (10) participants will be chosen to make up the sample. The Snowball and
Purposeful Random Sampling methods were chosen in order to narrow down the
amount of respondents the study will be using.
Anisha: The participants will then be requested to sign a consent form stating
that their participation in the study will be completely voluntary. Then, the
participants will be interviewed individually through video call using online video
conferencing services such as Zoom or Google Meet, whichever is most
convenient for the participants. Semi-structured, one-to-one interviews will be
used to allow the researchers some degree of flexibility and so as to not
intimidate the participants.
Lowysa: Regarding the ethical considerations for this research, aside from the
consenting form that will be distributed, it will be made known to the participants
that their participation in the study is absolutely voluntary. The researchers will
make sure that the participants will be respected at all times and they will
reassure that their participation will not affect them in any way. The confidentiality
of the information supplied by the participants and the anonymity of participants
must and will be respected as well.
Lexie: The interviewer will have a set of questions to guide the researcher in
questioning and creating a conversation with the participants. The whole duration
of the interview for each participant will take approximately 10-15 minutes. The
interviews will be recorded and transcribed so that the researchers can take
notes and refer back to the audio and transcription for reference of the data
gathered. The interviews will be expected to finish within 1-2 weeks considering
the volume and available time of participants.
SLIDE 15:
Katrina: *read heading* Thematic content analysis will be used to analyze the
interview data. This method consists of five steps which are: Transcription,
Grouping of Data, Searching for Themes, Analysis and Interpretation, and
Verification. Step 1: Transcription: The researchers will listen carefully to the
recorded interviews then proceed to convert these spoken words into written
form for easier understanding and analysis. Step 2: Grouping of Data: The data,
in the form of the interviewees’ written texts, will be divided according to the
specific interview questions they answered to allow for easier classification.
These divided data will then be read more closely in order for the researchers to
be able to determine the theme present in each set of data.
