TEACHER OF SCREEN INTRODUCTION

VIDEO ABOUT HEALTH
Health is wealth. This common saying
holds a lot of weight because it has truth behind
it. But what exactly is disease prevention and
how can you prevent diseases from happening?
In general, disease prevention refers to
measures taken to prevent diseases instead of
curing or treating the symptoms.

In this module, you will be able to

identify the different ways on how to prevent
and control non-communicable diseases
Discussion

Prevention refers to activities to stop people

from getting diseases or to stop a disease from
TEACHER ON SCREEN getting worse. Examples are:
➢ Health promotion activities which
encourage healthy living and delay onset of
disease.
➢ Early detection programs
➢ Strategies to manage diseases and related
complications so that their progress is slowed or
stopped.
While, on the other hand, control refers to
activities that are done to slow the course of an
TEACHER OFF SCREEN existing disease or reduce its severity. For
SLIDE ON SCREEN example:

➢ Activities to control a disease to occur

after the disease has been contracted.
➢Control activities reduce the pathological
effects resulting from disease.

TEACHER OFF SCREEN Goals for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention

SLIDE ON SCREEN and Control

1. Reduce incidence of disease.

2. Delay onset of disease and disability.
3. Alleviate severity of disease.
4. Improve health-related quality and
TEACHER ON SCREEN duration of individual’s life.

Key Areas for the Primary Prevention of the
Major NCDs

A more cost-effective approach to the prevention

and control of major NCDs is the prevention
of the common risk factors. By promoting proper
TEACHER OFF SCREEN nutrition, we prevent at least four major NCDs.
VIDEO ABOUT HEALTH By not smoking, we prevent at least 40 diseases
and 20 types of cancers. With moderate alcohol
drinking, we prevent hepatic cancer and
cardiovascular disease. It also contributes to
central obesity further increasing cardiovascular
risk. The presence of diabetes mellitus and
hypertension also worsens the risk for
cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Stress,
although not mentioned in the list of risk factors,
TEACHER OFF SCREEN can also contribute significantly to some of these
SLIDE ON SCREEN major NCDs.

1. Promote proper nutrition

TEACHER OFF SCREEN ➢ Limit intake of fatty, salty and preserved
SLIDE ON SCREEN foods
➢ Increase intake of vegetables and fruits
➢ Avoid high caloric low-nutrient value
food like junk food, instant noodles, soft drinks
➢Start developing healthy habits in children
TEACHER OFF SCREEN
SLIDE ON SCREEN 2. Encourage more physical activity and
exercise
➢ Moderate physical activity of at least 30
minutes for most days
➢ Integrate physical activity and exercise
into regular day-to-day activities
➢ Promote walking as one form of exercise
that is possible for all including older persons
and persons with cardiovascular disease
TEACHER OFF SCREEN 3. Promote a smoke-free individuals and
SLIDE ON SCREEN environment

➢ Smoking cessation for active smokers to

reduce risk
➢ Prohibit smoking inside living areas,
houses and closed areas
➢ Avoid smoke-filled places
TEACHER OFF SCREEN ➢ Advocate for implementation of policies
SLIDE ON SCREEN that support smoke-free environment
➢ Support policies/ordinances/laws that
limit access of cigarettes to children and youth

4. Discourage excessive alcohol drinking

➢ The practice of excessive alcohol drinking
is not encouraged considering the increasing
deaths due to vehicular accidents and effects on
the liver.
5. Manage stress effectively
➢ Managing stress among individuals and
population is important since chronic stress or
pressure is considered another risk factor that
may lead to other unhealthy practices leading to
NCDs.

6. Regular health check-up for early

diagnosis and prompt treatment
➢ Early detection of presence of risk factors
and diseases is essential for prompt treatment
and avoidance of complications.
Policies and Treatments to Reduce the NCD
Burden
There is great recognition and understanding of
NCDs and how they adversely affect health and
development in the Philippines. The Government
of the Philippines is committed to tackling NCDs
and is already demonstrating significant efforts
to take action. Multiple strategies, plans and
legislation are in place in tobacco control,
harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diets and
physical activity. These include:

▪ A national multisectoral plan and a

Department of Health strategic action plan for
NCD prevention and control 2017–2025;
▪ a recently updated national tobacco
control strategy;
▪ tobacco and alcohol taxation: 2012
Republic Act 10351 (also known as the Sin Tax
Reform Law); and 2017 Republic Act 10963 (Tax
Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN))
▪ Package of Essential NCD Interventions
(PhilPEN);
▪ Philhealth primary care benefit package
for NCDs;
▪ provision of NCD maintenance medicines
under the Medicines Access Program of the
Department of Health;
▪ policies on cancer prevention and control,
including palliative and hospice care;
▪ STOPSMOKE mobile health program
together with a quit-line and smoking-cessation
clinics;
▪ Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition
2017–2022, which addresses stunting,
TEACHER ON SCREEN overweight and obesity; and
▪ guidelines for front-of-pack labelling for
prepackaged food.

GENERALIZATION
TEACHER ON SCREEN
Always remember this saying that “ Prevention
is better than cure” it’s better to take care that
problem does not happen than to have to solve
the afterwards. It easier to stop something bad
from happening in the first place than to fix the
damage after it has happened.
