Sound is produced when object vibrates. Sounds

maybe soft and loud.

Sound is very important part of our life. Sound helps

us to communicate with other people. We talk and
express ourselves by using sound. We hear and listen to
others with the help of sound.

What’s New
Read the lyrics of the song or watch the video from
the link below so you can sing with Barney, then answer
the questions that follow.
Indoor- Outdoor Voices
( Barney Songs)

When we talk, we’ve got two choices,

We can use either one of our two voices.
My indoor voice is kind of quiet
Like a kitty who’s just meowed. (Meow)
And my outdoor voice is fun to try it
‘Cause it’s big and strong and loud.

5
When we’re in school on riding in a car,
It’s our indoor voice we use.
We can still have fun, no matter where we are
With a quiet voice we choose.

And when we use both voices every day,

It’s easy to decide which one.
We use our indoor here and outdoor there
And we know they both are fun.
When we’re outside just playing around,
It’s our outdoor voice we use.
We can be real loud, tall and proud
Like a rooster when he cock-a doodle-doos.

Questions:
1. What kind of voice do we use when we are inside a
classroom or a car?

2. Why do we use loud sounds when we are playing at

the park?

3. How do sounds help us in communicating with others?

6
What is It
Some sounds that reach our ears are loud, others are
soft.

Let us try to do this.

Get a big empty can, or drum.

Beat the drum as hard as you can several times.

Describe the sound you hear.

Beat the drum very gently several times. Compare

this sound with the first.

When you beat the drum hard, you applied great

force producing strong vibrations that creates loud
sounds. The vibrations it makes are strong. The sound that
reaches your ears is loud. When you beat the drum
gently, you use only a lesser force. The vibrations made by
the drum are not strong. The sound that reaches your ears
is soft (Mingoa, 2010)

Volume is the loudness and softness of sound.

We hear sounds that are loud and soft. Sounds that

are pleasant to ears are like music. Music is a beautiful
sound. Pleasant sounds are relaxing.

7
When the sound becomes very loud, it becomes
noise. Unpleasant sounds are irritating. Noise is unpleasant
to the ears. Too much noise produces noise pollution that
can affect our health; we feel uncomfortable and unable
to rest and relax. Noise can also give some benefits. An
explosion can be a warning sign of danger (Villegas,
2004).

What’s More

Activity 1: On a separate sheet of paper, tell whether

the object produces a loud or soft sound. Write L- if loud
sound or S- if soft sound.
1. ring of an alarm clock 2. beating of a drum

2. bus horning 4. passing jeepney

5. two coins dropping

8
Activity 2: Sounds can be pleasing and unpleasing to
us. Look at the following pictures and describe the sounds
of the objects. Write letter A for pleasant or B for
unpleasant. Do this on a separate sheet of paper.
1. takeoff and landing of 2. singing of national anthem
aircraft

3. speeding motorbike 4 playing musical instrument

5. honking of horns on a traffic jam

9
Activity 3. Draw a happy face if the sentence
shows way of protecting the ears from loud sounds or
draw a sad face if it does NOT. Do this on a
separate sheet of paper.
1. Shout at each other.
2. Talk to your classmates softly.
3. Turn the volume of the radio to the loudest.
4. Wear ear protection when going to a place where
there are continuous loud sounds.
5. Avoid loud noises.

Fill in the blanks by choosing your answers from the
box below. Write your answers on a separate sheet of
paper.
