Bio Local Extrema 2 Variables 2020

This document discusses finding local extrema of functions of several variables. It contains 5 exercises: 1. The first exercise asks to find local extrema of 2 functions. 2. The second exercise asks to prove that a function f has no local extrema, referring to a relevant theorem. 3. The third exercise provides solutions for finding local extrema of 5 functions, including using partial derivatives to find critical points and the Hessian matrix to determine maxima/minima. 4. The fourth exercise asks to find local extrema of 2 additional functions. 5. The final exercise discusses finding local extrema at an advanced level for 2 functions.

LOCAL EXTREMA OF FUNCTIONS OF SEVERAL VARIABLES

Level A
Exercise 1 Find local extrema of the following functions:

1. f (x, y) = (y − 2)x2 − y 2

2. f (x, y) = (3x + 4x3 )(y 2 + 2y)

Level B
Exercise 2 Prove that f has no local extrema. Clearly refer to the thm you
take advantage of.
x
f (x, y) = − x2 + ln(4 − y 2 ).
y

Exercise 3 Find local extrema of the following functions:

1. f (x, y) = ln(2 − 2y − x2 − 2x) + 2y + 1;

Solution: D : 2 − 2y − x2 − 2x > 0. We have
−2x − 2
fx0 (x, y) = ,
2 − 2y − x2 − 2x
−2
fy0 (x, y) = + 2.
2 − 2y − x2 − 2x
In order to find all critical points of f we shall solve the system
−2x−2
( (
fx0 (x, y) = 0 2−2y−x2 −2x
= 0
⇔ −2
fy0 (x, y) = 0 2−2y−x2 −2x
+ 2= 0.

Hence x = −1, y = 1.
The function f may attain its local extremum only at P = (−1, 1).

Calculate

00 −2x2 − 4x − 8 + 4y
fxx (x, y) = ,
(2 − 2y − x2 − 2x)2
00 −4x − 4
fxy (x, y) = ,
(2 − 2y − x2 − 2x)2
00 −4
fyy (x, y) = .
(2 − 2y − x2 − 2x)2

Hence

00
f 00 (−1, 1) fxy (−1, 1) −2 0
A(−1, 1) = xx = = 8.

00 00
fxy (−1, 1) fyy (−1, 1) 0 −4

Therefore f attains its local maximum at P = (−1, 1).

2. f (x, y) = (x + 2)3 − 2x2 y − 8xy − 8y + y 4 ;

3. f (x, y) = e−x (2x + y 3 + 3y 2 );

4. f (x, y) = (x2 − y)2 + (y + 2)3 − 12y;

5. f (x, y) = x3 − 2x2 + y − ln(y − x2 ).

Level C
Exercise 4 Find local extrema of the following functions:
√ 2
1. f (x, y) = x − 2y + ln x + y 2 + 3 arctan xy ,

2. f (x, y) = x2 y 3 (6 − x − y).
