RCC1 - Lec10

This document discusses the design of two-way solid slabs. It defines two-way slabs as slabs supported on all four sides where the L/S ratio is less than or equal to 2. The bending moments in two-way slabs depend on the spans in both directions and support conditions. Formulas are provided to calculate the bending moments for simple supported and continuous slabs. Minimum thickness requirements are also outlined based on span ratios. An example problem is worked through analyzing and designing a continuous slab. Reinforcement is designed for flexure and crack control and detailing requirements are discussed.

Design of Two- Way Solid Slabs

Introduction
• RC Slab: RC Slab stands for a horizontal structural component of
steel reinforced concrete.
• Generally, the thickness of RC Solid slab varies from 75mm to
150mm.
• RC Solid Slabs are frequently applied as floorings, ceilings etc.
Slabs are supported on two sides only or contain beams on all four
sides.
• Slabs in buildings are usually used to transmit the loads on floors
and roofs to the supporting beam
• A two-way solid slab supported on all four sides, but L/S≤2 are
classified as two-way slabs.
• Main reinforcement is placed in the shorter direction, while
the longer direction is provided with shrinkage reinforcement to limit
cracking

Two way slab:
• When a slab is supported on all four of its sides it effectively spans
in both directions, and it is sometimes more economical to design the
slab on this basis.
• The amount of bending in each direction will depended on the two
spans and the conditions of restraint at each support

ACI Code Specifications for Two -Way Slab Design:

1. Minimum Slab Thickness:

• To control deflection, ACI Code
• specifies minimum thickness values for two-way solid slabs.

Minimum thickness (not less than) :

Minimum thickness (not less than) :

. Where:
Ln = clear span in long direction,
ẞ = ratio of clear span in long direction to clear span in short
direction ( L/S)
ẞs= average value of constrain for all members
