Gandhi Labour msntute, Ahrnedabad

Architect: BaJkrishna Doshi - Stein,

Doshi and Bhalla
Client: Gandhi Labour Institute
Consultants: C. H. Shah (structure), Stein, Doshi
and Bhalla (services)
Contractor: H. K Construction Company
Year of Completion: 1984
Area: 5600 m2
This institutional complex is derived clearly
from the architect's earlier experiments in his
Sangath project. The atavistic language of vaults is
explored here with pugnacious modernity. This
building differs from its precedent, however, in its
decidedly more urbanistic theme. Although motifs
and traces of the paradise garden are worked into
the environmental collage, fragmentary allusions to
a townscape - plaza, courtyard, viaduct, street and
stair - are the formal gestures of the composition
The institute promotes research and training
in labour welfare. Courses and seminars are
short-term, and therefore there is no permanent
student body and few staff. Only the Director lives
on the campus. The complex has three distinct
parts. The first, a two-storeyed academic block, has
several seminar rooms, classrooms, a library, offices,
lecture hall and an outdoor amphitheatre. The
second, distinguished from the first by an angular
skew, comprises the duung room and kitchen at the
ground level with the Director's residence above.
The students' dormitory is the third element, a
tower in comparison to the other vaulted buildings.
It is an elegantly proportioned mass surmounted by
a slender white water tank.
The academic block is organized along a
two-level vaulted circulation spine that serves as an
exhibition gallery on the upper level. Specific
functions such as the library and a public
auditorium are defined by individualvaults that
intersect the spine at right angles. A pair of these
extensions containing offices and seminar rooms
are linked by a third element to enclose a small
court - a focal point for the overall complex. This
- urbanistic mace flows out under the vault of the
main circulation spine to the open plaza and
beyond A tartan structural grid
corridors and inset terraces under
spans adjoirring larger vaulted spaces. ,
