Design Brief - Gauri - Ferry Terminal - 30.9.23

This document discusses the design of a proposed ferry terminal in Bhayandar, India. It provides background on the importance of water transport in India and Mumbai's history with waterways. It then describes the Bhayander Creek which connects Mumbai to Thane district locations. To make better use of this waterway, there is a proposal to build a ferry terminal in Bhayandar to connect communities along the creek and reduce travel times between areas. The terminal building program includes offices, waiting areas, refreshment spaces, restrooms, and other necessary facilities. Additional areas like loading docks, green spaces, and utilities are also required.

DESIGN DISSERTATION SEMESTER IX FERRY TERMINAL

7. Design Brief

Water transport in India has played a significant role in the country's economy and is indispensable
to foreign trade. India is endowed with an extensive network of waterways in the form of rivers,
canals, backwaters, creeks and a long coastline accessible through the seas and oceans. It has the
largest carrying capacity of any form of transport and is most suitable for carrying bulky goods over
long distances.
The history of water transport in Mumbai dates back to the Seven Islands of Bombay, which were
under Portuguese possession. In 1661, they were handed over to the British, and between 1820 and
1857, the islands slowly became what was then known as Bombay. It was with the opening of the
‘Overland Route’, a transportation route that made it possible to travel to Europe, that Mumbai built
its first steamer in about 1830. The route cut travel time down from five months to one and a half.
By 1850, Bombay came into being. Trade between Europe and India was expanding, with the
opening of the Overland Route, and the city’s coast was soon lined with wharfs, docks and
godowns.
Connecting Mumbai suburb location with Thane district locations far suburb stations like Naigaon
and Vasai Virar, Bhayander Creek (Also Called ‘Vasai Creek’ and ‘Bhayander Ki Khaadi’ in
Hindi) are 2 island creeks about 2 to 4 km long with ever flowing Arabian sea.
The creek is also referred as BASSEIN CREEK as in west it connects the Bassein Village Fort and
in east it goes through the Thane district which can be seen when you pass through Ghodbunder
road. In the north is thane district stations Naigaon, Vasai, Nalasopara, Virar and Other till Dahanu
connecting Gujarat (Western Route) and in South is Out city Mumbai. On the islands of this creek
are small fisherman villages which can be seen, Towards Bhayander the creek is crowded during
Ganesh Visarjan day and towards Naigaon there are mangroves.
Taking out an opportunity to make this water resource as a water route which will connect
bhayandar to vasai within 20 minutes and bhayandar to dombivali within 54 minutes, there is an
urge of having a Transport Terminal at Bhayandar for the purpose of local transport.
Due to this proposal by the Thane Municipal Corporation and the Central Government, the project
is a design proposal for a Ferry Terminal at Bhayandar – Jesal Park.
