NOTES EMPTECH UNIT 1

LESSON 1 Understanding ICT and Its

Relevance to Society

Introduction to Information and Communications Technology

Information and Communications Technology

- refers to all electronic and
communication technologies that enable the management and distribution of
information.

- ICT is a combination of its components—people, data, procedures, hardware,

software, and
information—that has to work hand in hand to create systems that aim to improve
our way
of performing day-to-day activities and enable us to communicate easily.

Components of Information and Communications Technology

People
- People refer to individuals who are responsible for the development, improvement, and
maintenance of an ICT system. People are also responsible for the input and supply of data
to the system and make decisions from the output information from the system.
Procedures
- Procedures are actions performed in a certain order and condition to make sure
an ICT system runs smoothly.
Hardware
- Hardware is the technical term used to describe physical or tangible parts of an
ICT system. If you can touch it, then it is considered hardware.
Software
- Software is the generic term for programs and applications installed on your
personal computer, laptop, or smartphone.
Data
- Data are the raw facts or figures that can be processed, stored, and transmitted by an
ICT system. Examples of data include sets of numbers, the characters in a document or
website, audio and video recordings, and transaction records.
Information
- Information is the result of processed, organized, and structured data. It is the output of
an ICT system with context and meaning that makes it useful for the people using the
system.
Impact of ICT on the Society

The developments in ICT have become one of the greatest influences in shaping our
society. From the moment we wake up until we close our eyes to sleep, our lives
are affected by the marvelous inventions brought about by ICT. Computers, the
most popular icon of ICT, are present almost everywhere—from our homes,
schools, churches, hospitals, government offices, restaurants, and grocery stores,
to name a few. This serves as proof that ICT plays an important role in almost
all aspects of our society. Computers pave the way for a more convenient,
efficient, and effective way of performing day-to-day transactions. Even our
regular buddy, the smartphone, is a product of ICT.

LESSON 2 Social, Mobile, and Assistive Media

Social Media
-The introduction of mobile technology such as smartphones, tablets, laptop computers,
and notebook computers, as well as the rapid development of wireless technology, has
led to the development of newer, more productive, and more efficient ways of
communication.

.
Mobile Media
- Continued advances in technology have brought about the existence of small but
compelling devices like smartphones, tablets, game consoles, e-readers, Personal
Digital Assistant(PDA), and laptop computers. Mobile media refers to communication
devices that are characterized by portability or their ability to be moved or carried easily.

Assistive Media
- Assistive media are electronic devices or programs that seek to reach out to people
with disabilities by providing the support that will increase or improve their functional
capabilities through the use of technology.

LESSON 3 Convergent Technologies and

Evolution of the Web

Convergence of Technology
- So what's technological convergence? It refers to a state in which tomorrow technology
entities and functions are combined into one device or system. The modality of
technological convergence is observable in three categories, namely: computing
technology, content technology, or communication technology

The 3Cs of Technological Convergence

- The modality of technological convergence is classified into three categories,
namely, computing technology, content technology, and communication technology.

Website versus Web Page

- The Internet is a handy invention that has proven its worth since the time of its
conception. It is a very reliable technology that aids people in communicating,
researching for information, and disseminating information.

Static Web Page versus Dynamic Web Page

- Static webpages are characterized by their fixed content, which means that its
shows the Same content every time the web page is accessed.

LESSON 4 Uses of the Internet, Online

Systems, and Platforms

Uses of the Internet

People have different ways of enjoying the Internet. As a student, you probably go online to
research for your assignment, or to chat with your friends. Your brother may have been an
active user of the Internet as a video gamer or movie enthusiast. How about your parents?
What do you think is their purpose for connecting to the Internet? What do you think are the
reasons why your friend, Shiela, cannot get her hands off her smartphone?

Internet as a Communication Tool

The Internet has served a significant part in the lives of people for decades, most notably as
a communication tool. Each year it evolves into a higher version that makes people from
long distances communicate with one another on a more personal level. Before its
existence, we used to talk through the mail and telephone calls, and we all know their
inadequacies. Traditional paper mail later became known as snail mail due to its prolonged
process of delivery, in which a single letter could take a span of weeks to a couple of months
to be received. On the other hand, telephone calls, particularly long-distance calls, were too
expensive to use often during its early years.
Internet as a Tool for Performing Business Transactions
Activities like food ordering, bills payment, flight reservations, shopping, and many more are
More accessible and more convenient through the use of the Internet. Online transactions
enable people to perform their undertakings in the comfort of their homes. This
Break through also helps save a person’s time and effort spent on traveling to and from
offices where they have to transact their business.

Online Systems
An online system is a collaboration of hardware, software, and network devices that
facilitates the transfer and processing of data among internet-enabled devices. It is an
Automated system that handles and processes instructions or queries from devices like a
smartphone to another device like a computer or database server.
