1 Introduction
This user manual describes the most common user tasks for optimal operation and maintenance off the
OPTIWAVE 8300 C Non-contact Radar (FMCW) Level Meter
(For complete software functionality description of the radar please consult the “OPTIWAVE 7300 C” hand
book).
Please note that this user manual deals with the OPTIWAVE 8300 C radar as a stand alone unit.
The OPTIWAVE 8300 C is usually connected to CARGOMASTER® level gauging system trough a
HART® communication line. Measured values will then be available in the CARGOMASTER® system.
Please note that the integration between CARGOMASTER® and radar is handled in the
CARGOMASTER® user manual and will not be considered here.
To access the local digital display screen and the operator push buttons it is necessary to open the hinged
protection cower on top of the instrument. To open cower please loosen nut in front. NB! Please note that
the protection cower must always be closed and secured at sea.

2 User modes
There are 3 modes of operation:
• Operator.
• Supervisor.
• Service.
Some data will only be available if the device is correctly configured by the supervisor, as

You can enable or change the password for the supervisor mode. For more data, refer to chap
2.2.5 Function description.
You cannot select "Service menu" in supervisor mode. Menus that can be selected are in black

WARNING!
Purge the antenna with hot water, steam, solvent, another liquid that is compatible with the
cargo and/or tank condition.
Determining compatibility with the present cargo and/or tank condition is left to the operator.
CAUTION!
Purge the antenna at intervals to make sure the inner surface of the antenna stays clean,
enabling the device to measures accurately.
This is especially true if having carried or are frequently carrying sticky cargo that could have
a tendency to contaminated and congeal in the antenna.
• Connect a steam hose, water line or portable hand pump (with cleaning solvent) to the cleaning
connection.
• Open the ball valve to let the steam/water/solvent into the antenna.
i Make sure that the connected line has sufficient pressure to overcome the tank pressure before
opening the ball valve.
• Close ball valve before disconnecting.
i The necessary cleaning time depends on the degree and type of contamination.
• The removal and installation of the signal converter housing. For more data, refer to How to
remove the signal converter ref chap 3.2.2.
The housing can be detached from the flange system under process conditions.
3 Disconnect terminal 1 for the radar. NB! note the conductor polarity for reconnection.
4 Disconnect terminal 2 for the inert gas sensor. NB! note the conductor polarity for reconnection.
5 Loosen cable glands and cable protection for inert sensor and shipboard power/signal cable.
8 Remove the housing by sliding it up and off the adaptor collar pin.
9 Install new housing by sliding it down on the adaptor collar pin.
10 Rotate housing and position as required.
11 Tighten the M10 socket head set screw on the housing support pillar with a 5 mm hexagon
key.
12 Put all cables into the new signal converter housing.
13 Tighten all cable glands and cable protection for inert sensor and shipboard power/signal cable. NB!
Make sure that all glands are well tightened around the cable sheath.
14 Connect terminal 1 for the radar according to noted conductor polarity.
15 Connect terminal 2 for the inert gas sensor according to noted conductor polarity.
16 Reinstall the terminal compartment cover.
17 Retighten the cover stop screw on the terminal compartment cover. (3 mm Allen wrench)
CAUTION!
If the spare device was set up specifically for the tank in question, the device will display a correct
reading. If not, refer to signal converter setup procedure ref chap 3.2.3.
If the radar does not communicate with the CARGOMASTER® system, it may be necessary
to reset the corresponding HART modem (HR-400, Green module with 3 LEDS).
Locate the modem for the radar in question and pull out the plug with terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Leave the plug out for minimum 30 seconds.
Reinsert the plug quickly.
The modem and radar will restart. This process may take several minutes.
When all the 3 LEDS are blinking regularly, the communication has been restotred.
WARNING!
To be able to set up the converter correctly it is necessary to know the
-Reference offset (Ro, Distance between radar flange and Ullage reference point). Contact
KROHNE Skarpenord or refer to records onboard for the reference offset.
-Tank height (Distance between radar reference and radar strike point). Contact KROHNE
Skarpenord or refer to records onboard for the Tank height.
3.2.4 How to use the empty spectrum function to filter parasite signals
If the device measures level in a tank that contains obstructions (agitator, supports, heating
pipes etc.)), these objects can cause radar signal interference. You can use the empty
spectrum function in the device's Quick Setup menu to filter radar signal interference.
INFORMATION!
We recommend that you record an empty spectrum when the tank is empty and all the moving
parts (agitators etc. if applicable.) are switched on.
NOTE! Does not apply to tank washing apparatus.
