temperature of 500 0C, and the right surface is insulated. The thermal conductivity
k=25W/m0C, and there is uniform heat generation inside the wall of Q = 400
W/m3. Determine the temperature distribution through the wall thickness using
linear elements.

2. Determine the temperature distribution in a fin having rectangular cross section 5 L3


and is 8 cm long, 4 cm wide and 1 cm thick. Assume convection heat loss occurs
from the free end of the fin. One end is fixed. Take k=3 W/cm0C, h= 0.1 W/cm 2
0C and T∞=200C.

b) Derive the stiffness matrix for heat flow in a rectangular fin, where k, h
and P denotes thermal conductivity, convective heat coefficient and
perimeter of fin and A is area of cross section of fin.
c) Derive finite element expression for 1 dimensional three noded heat
conduction element from fundamentals.
4 For the composite wall shown in the figure 3 below, compute the interface 5 L3
temperatures considering three elements. Take K1=5 W/m-K, K2=0.6 W/m- K,
K3=20 W/m- K, T1=1000C, T4=4000C

5 Determine the temperature distribution in a fin having rectangular cross section 5 L3

6 The coordinates of vertices of a triangular element are given by A (50, 50), B (70, 5 L3
60) and C (60, 80). All the dimensions are in mm only. The temperatures at these
vertices A, B and C are 100 0C, 200 0C and 300 0C respectively. Determine the
temperature at the point P (55, 55)

7 A composite slab consists of 3 materials of different conductivities i.e. 22 W/m K, 5 L3


32 W/m K, 52 W/m K of thickness 0.31 m, 0.14 m and 0.14 m, respectively. The
outer surface is 22 0 C and the inner surface is exposed to the convective heat
transfer coefficient of 28 W/m2 K, 8000 C. Determine the temperature distribution
within the wall.
