MATH-6 Q2 Mod13

This module teaches students how to compare integers with other numbers like whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. It defines integers and explains that when comparing integers, the number closer to zero has a greater value if both numbers are negative. If one number is positive and one is negative, the positive number is always greater. The module includes examples of comparing integers, fractions, and decimals using comparison symbols like <, >, and =. Students complete activities practicing comparing values of integers.

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE?

Before you start with this module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will
disturb you while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to
successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the instructions indicated in every page of this
module.
2. Write on your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Writing
enhances learning, that is important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer
key card.
5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!

PARTS OF THE MODULE

• Expectations - These are the things that you need to know or learn
after completing the lessons in the module.

LESSON
Comparing Integers

EXPECTATIONS

You will compare integers with other numbers such as whole numbers, fractions,
and decimals.
Specifically, this module will help you to:
• define the meaning of integers;
• understand which integer is greater or lesser; and
• answer the questions with symbols like <, > or =.

Pre-test

Read the questions carefully. Encircle the letter of the correct

answer.

1. Fill in the blank with the correct sign >, <, or =

-3.5 ________ -1.5
A. > B. < C. = D. ≥

2. Fill in the blank with the correct sign >, <, or =

-6/8 ________ -8/10
A. > B. < C. = D. ≤

3. Fill in the blank with the correct sign >, <, or =

-1 ________ 1
A. > B. < C. = D. ≤

4. A number greater than zero.

A. Positive B. Negative C. Integer D. none of
these

5. What symbol will be used in the blank to make the statement correct? -1 ___ 0
A. > B. < C. = D. ≤

Looking Back to Your Lesson

In this lesson, we will learn about comparing integers. We'll also take a
look at a few examples of comparing integers with other whole numbers, fractions
and decimals.

Review: Compare the following. Use <,> or =.

1 1
1. 21 __ 60 3. 8.9 __ 0.89 5. 2 __ 4
2. 62 __ 88 4. 5.23__ 5.2

Brief Introduction:

We can use a number line to compare integers.

Negative Integers Positive Integers

Number line

As numbers move to the right of 0, numbers get bigger. So, if the numbers
are positive, the smaller number is the one nearer to 0.

As numbers move to the left of 0, numbers get smaller. So, if the numbers
are negative, the bigger number is the one closer to zero

Things to remember:

A Positive integer is ALWAYS greater than negative integer.

Example:
Compare 4 and -3

4 > -3
4 is a positive integer, so 4 is greater than -3

In comparing two negative integers, the integer closer to zero is ALWAYS

greater.
Example:
Compare -5 and -2

4
Mathematics 6

-2 is bigger than -5 because it is closer to 0

-2 > -5

In comparing two positive integers, the integer closer to zero is ALWAYS lesser.
Example:
Compare 9 and 4

Since we are comparing two positive integers here, the smaller number is the
one nearer to 0.
9>4

Zero is ALWAYS greater than negative integers.

Example:
Compare 0 and -5.

0 > -5

Zero is ALWAYS less than positive integers.

Example:
Compare 0 and 5.

0<5

When comparing fractions, use the following steps:

1. Write the given rational numbers with positive denominators.

2. Look for the LCM of the denominators.
3. Make the denominators equal using LCM.
4. Compare the numerators and give then proper inequality sign.

5
Mathematics 6

Some examples:
2 1
1. Which of and (- 3) is greater?
5

With this example, one fraction is positive and other is negative. And we know
that positive numbers are always greater than the negative numbers.
2 1
So, > (- 3)
5

4 1
2. Which of the two fractions and is greater?
7 5

4 1
The denominators of 7 and 5 are positive and different. So find the LCM of 7 and
5, which is 35.
4 4𝑥5 20
= 7 𝑥 5 = 35
7

1 1𝑥7 7
= 5 𝑥 7 = 35
5

20 7 4 1
From the above its clear that 35 > . So, 7 > 5.
35

Comparing decimals are just like comparing fractions. Just like fractions are a part of a
whole, decimals are a part of a whole too. That’s why, a negative decimal is ALWAYS
lesser than the positive decimal. When you have two negative decimals, the one nearer
to zero is always greater. The farther a negative decimal is from zero, the smaller its
value.

Examples:

0.54 ____ -0.81

A negative number is always lesser than a positive number. Same with decimals and
fractions.
0.54 > -0.81

-0.92 ____ -0.65

Since we have two negative decimals here, the smaller the number the closer it is to
zero.

-0.92 < -0.65

Values on Circles
Star, who is an outstanding pupil in Mathematics, is being trained by
Teacher Rose for the upcoming Math Quiz Bee. On today’s review of comparing
integers with decimals, Teacher Rose has prepared a fun activity. “Star, you need
to put the lesser values on smaller circles, and the greater values on bigger
circles.”, Teacher Rose instructed. “That would be fun, Teacher. I’m excited!”, Star
said.
