Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?

The film, “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” depicts about the life of
Filipinos with the Americans and Spaniards during the 19 th century and it is also about
finding ones identity. On the other hand, it was also meant to showcase the story of a
child-like and arrogant character named Kulas who journeyed to Manila and retrieved a
friar’s son. He was able to flip his fortune and results to having people take advantage
of him.
The casts are wearing clothes depending on their social status. I was able to
notice that high class men and women are more formal. Houses are either made of
wood or rock but all of it shows native interior and exterior designs. Above all, I also
want to highlight on how Filipinos are drawn to entertainment like singing and acting.
Aside from the surface observations, I was able to look within the movie as well.
Life back then was so hard. There are constant battles and crimes. People will look
down on you if you are poor or can easily be fooled, and the amount of trust that you
can give is quite risky.
Despite on how heavy the film was because it lasted for more than two hours, I
was amazed of how the characters were portrayed and how the life in the 19 th century
was shown. The film represented it well to the point that I got curious about the
struggles in finding ones identity and a will to live back then.
The main question that the film seeks to answer is, “Sino ang mga Pilipino?” This
question was constantly asked by Kulas to different characters that he met throughout
the journey and he later on found out that our identity of being a Filipino will rise only if
we are compassionate and brave enough to help people and make a stand for our
country.
