FORMENTERA - ACT1 - Problem 2

The document provides the solution to design a rectangular spread footing to support a column. Key details include: - The footing dimensions are 4m x 3m with 25mm rebars in both directions and a thickness of 790mm. - Checks are performed to ensure the footing design satisfies allowable soil pressure, bearing capacity, shear strength, punching shear, and bending moment requirements. - 17 bars of 25mm diameter are needed along the long direction of the footing and 13 bars for the inner band and 5 bars for the outer band along the short direction.

MACHINE PROBLEM 2:

Design a rectangular spread footing to support a 405mm square

center column. The column carries a service dead load and live load
as given. The allowable soil pressure in the base of the footing is
275 KPa. The column is reinforced with 6-32mm diameter bars. The
weight of soil is 20.4 KN/m³, concrete is 23.5 KN/m³. Use 75mm clear
cover and 25 mm rebars in both directions, with fć = 21 MPa, fy = 345
MPa. The smaller dimension of the footing is ¾ of the bigger
dimension.
DL = 715 kN & LL = 1028 kN

DL + LL

SOLUTION
Assume t=790 mm

(1) Solve for the effective soil pressure

qe = qa - [ ( 1.25 - . 790 ) ( 20.4 ) ] - ( . 790 × 23.5 )

qe = 247.051 kPa

(2) Solve for the footing dimension

L
A = DL + LL
W
qe
A = 7.055 m²
A = L × W ; L = 2W
A = 2W × W = 2W²
2W² = 7.055
W = 1.88 ( say 2 m )
L=4m
Note: The smaller dimension of the footing is ¾ of the bigger dimension.
So 3m is the ¾ of the bigger dimension which is 4m
Try 4m x 3m
(3) Solve for the net ultimate soil pressure

qu(net) = Pu = 1.20 ( 715 ) + 1.60 ( 1028 ) = 2502.8

A 4×3 12

qu (net) = 208.57 kPa

qa (ult) = Pu (qa) = 2502.8 ( 275 )

DL + LL 715 + 1028

qa (ult) = 394.88 kPa > qu (net) = 208.57 kPa Safe

(4) Check the footing thickness from bearing/one-way shear.

• Along the long direction (horizontal axis)

Mu = 208.57 (3 × 1.2975 ) ( 1.2975 )

2
Mu = 702.26 KN.m

(7) Solve for the reinforcement

a) Along the long direction (horizontal axis)

Mu = 1010.84 KN.m

Ru = Mu = 1010.84 ( 1000 ) ²
⌀bd² .90 ( 3000 ) ( 683.75 )

Ru = 0.8008 MPa

• The actual steel ratio

p = 0.85 f’c [ 1 - √1- 2Ru = . 85(21) [1-√1- 2( 0.8008 )

fy 0.85 f’c 345 .85(21)

p = 0.0024
• Minimum steel ratio

p= √f’c = √21
4( fy ) 4( 345 )

p = 0.0033

p = 1.40 = 1.40 = 0.0041 , govern

fy 345

Hence, Pmin = 0.0041 > Pact = 0.0024

Use P = Pmin = 0.0041

When

As = pbd = 0.0041 ( 3000 )( 683.57 )

As = 8410.125 mm²

Using 25mm⌀ = Ao = 490.87 mm²

n25mm ⌀ = 8410.125 = 8410.125 = 17.13 ( Say 17 )

Ao 490.87

Therefore use 17 pcs pf. 25mm ⌀ running along the long direction

b) Along the short direction (vertical axis)

Mu = 702.26 KN.m

Ru = Mu = 702 ( 1000 ) ²
⌀bd² .90 ( 4000 ) ( 683.75 )

Ru = 0.4173 MPa

• The actual steel ratio

p = 0.85 f’c [ 1 - √1- 2Ru = . 85(21) [1-√1- 2( 0.4173 )

fy 0.85 f’c 345 .85(21)

p = 0.0012

P = 0.0012 < Pmin = 0.0041

Therefore use Pmin

From

AsB = AsB =. 1.33

As 11213.5 1.33 + 1

AsB = 6400.84 mm²

n25 mm AsB 6400.84 = 13.04 (Say 13 )

As 490.87

Therefore use 13pcs of 25mm ⌀ for inner band.

For outer band

As = AsB + 2AsA
AsA = As - AsB

AsA = 11213.5 - ( 490.87 × 13 )

2

AsA = 2416.10 mm²

n25 mm = AsA = 2416.10 = 4.92 ( Say 5 )

Thereof use 5 pcs of 25mm ⌀ for outer band
