Maintain and Enhance Professional Practice
Professionalism is the skill, good judgement, and polite behavior that is
expected from a person who is trained to do a job well. A trainer must maintain and enhance professional practice because he/she is a professional. How can he/she do that?
The trainer must model high standards of performance. His/her performance
must be consistent with the organization’s goals and objectives. He/she must have appropriate professional techniques and strategies like techniques for initiating action and directing decision making or techniques for promoting active participation. The trainer must also apply ethical and inclusive practices in accordance with existing organizational policies and guidelines. To maintain professional practice, the trainer must also accept feedbacks from colleagues and clients in accordance with personal learning needs/areas of professional development. The trainer must participate professional development activities. The trainer must select development opportunities, participated in professional networks, and used technology to maintain regular communication. The trainer must reflect on and evaluate professional practice. He/she must research and integrate developments and trends impacting professional practice like new/revised training packages in vocational area of expertise, legislative/regulatory changes in vocational area of competency, etc. To identify improvements, the trainer must be open to all feedbacks coming from colleagues. The trainer must also identify and use innovative and responsive approaches for improving professional practice in accordance with continuous support to improve techniques and processes. This may include limited and systemic evaluation, records, review, and maintenance, self-assessment, etc.
As a whole, professionalism is required for a trainer because he/she is not just
dealing with learners but also dealing with other stakeholders in the industry he/she is working with. As what the saying tells, “professionalism: it’s not the job you do, it’s how you do the job.”
