Introduction
As Sundar Pichai rightly quotes “As a leader it is important to not just see your own success
but focus on the success of others”. An individual's willingness to adapt to changes that are
happening in the complex and chaotic external environment is a prerequisite for effective
leadership. Skilled leaders are the ones who recognize that the environment is dynamic, and
they need to adjust their actions and choices to suit it. Hence, they equip their organization to
comprehend the changes. Today the growing complexity makes intuition, intellect, and
charisma insufficient. To steer their companies through less well-known seas, leaders need
the right tools and strategies. The combination of when to delegate authority and when to
exercise it alone, when to rely on the group's knowledge and when to follow their own
judgement. a thorough comprehension of context, the capacity to accept complexity and
paradox, and a desire to make it happen when the things are even uncertain There is no
specific combination of traits that defines a great leader. In reality, different characteristics
matter in diverse circumstances. This does not negate the need to develop management skills,
though. It simply implies that to select the best strategy for a given situation as there are
many ways to leadership. The fundamental divisions of leadership characteristics consist of
character, contingency, influence and power, and behavioral theories. The finest approach in
this context is transformational leadership, which involves upholding integrity and motivating
a compelling vision among the team members. A useful framework for thinking about power
and influence in leaders in the workplace is provided by French and Raven's Forms of Power
(Exhibit-1), They’re useful for up-and-coming, inexperienced, and less self-aware leaders,
and most leaders combine a variety of different types of power. Alphabet CEO Sundar
Pichai is without a doubt one of the most influential CEO’s, the World has ever seen, from
coming from the humble background without even having much of the access to the
technology the goods he introduced to Google completely transformed the world, Google
Chrome, one of Google's finest products to date, which was created by his team. He even
integrated the technology and transformed the software of the Google Maps. He was
appointed as the CEO of google in 2015, a non-white man was heading the biggest
organization. He was even awarded Padma Bhushan India's third-highest civilian award in
the year 2022 while everything was going great for Pichai, His employees were not happy
with his leadership styles. In their point of view, he was very slow in taking the decisions and
the employees were not happy about their compensation and performance review strategy.
More than 36 Vice president left the organisation in the period of one year, Mr. Pichai knew
employees are questioning his ability, yet he chooses to remain silent, as leader employees
were expecting Sundar to at least address this issue and come up with appropriate
explanation. Sundar’s mantra “Don’t react always respond” but this mantra of his takes a lot
of time for decision making since employee’s issues are being heard and not being taken
seriously is what is exactly perceived by the employees of the google.
He reformed the technology and kept with the vison of Larry Page & Sergey Brin had while
starting the google. He was extremely confident about his own vision, opinions, and
decisions and took a bold move like pitching google chrome to top management while they
already rejected his offer twice. It is not easy to challenge the top managerial people in the
organisation.
Despite his adversity, he stood affirm and led a great organisation becoming one of the
great CEO’s as well as highest paid CEOs of all times. The motivating factors,
ambitions, and his driving factors that made him rise as a leader spite his
adversities. He was an expert communicator and learner that adapted to the dynamic changes
which an organisation faced like tough competition from Firefox and covid-19 his speeches,
news conferences, and radio broadcasts are perceived by young minds of India. As per our
discussions in the classroom on leadership, we came to know the importance of oration for
leaders.
