ABSTRACT

This study is a quantitative research of the impact of social media usage on

conduct among grade 12 students at Infanta Integrated School. The study studied

the impact of social media usage on grade 12 students' behavior, as well as which

social media platforms are widely used, using the Uses and Gratification theory as a

theoretical framework. The study's goal was to investigate how and whether

students were addicted to social media and, if so, how addicted they were. Also,

depression and withdrawal of interaction will be tackled in this paper.

30 students from the three strand of Grade 12 (HUMSS, ICT & HE) at Infanta

Integrated School were sampled for this study. They are divided by 10 students per

track. Data was collected by conducting an online survey and communicating the

results to the participants via the internet.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

We all know that because of the general availability of internet connection, it

become one of the most popular means of gathering information. Yet, because the

internet is seen as a very informative and entertaining platform, people use it for a

range of functions. Some of them have the potential to be addicted. The use of

social media is one of these.

Social media had become a global trend and a powerful element among

students, peers, and family communication. According to Dearborn (2014), “social

media is a communication channel which is very popular, extremely fast, broad, has
proven to be highly effective and as well as trusted by billions of people to share and

discover content concerning individuals, brands, information, and entertainment”.

Because of this, everyone can communicate easily anytime they want.

American Psychological Association described addiction as compulsive

behavior that leads to negative effects” wherein, like in other forms of addictions

such as drugs, gambling, and video gaming. People feel bound to activities such that

they become harmful habits, which then obstructs other important activities in their

lives such as their schoolworks and performance and this can be said of people

specifically students who use social media excessively. Most of them experiencing

depression because they always thought that they are not enough.

This is a significant concern since it may have a negative impact on students'

behavior, as evidenced by their activities in school.

Many people, particularly students, have been drawn to social media since its

introduction. As a result, the widespread attraction of social media may be cause for

concern, particularly given the continual increase in the amount of time students

spend online, which may alter and influence their behavior. Excessive use of these

sites is concerning, as it may result in social media addiction. Social media addiction

occurs when a person spends too much time on social media to the point where it

interferes with other elements of his or her life, such as school, work, relationships,

and social behaviors.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The goal of this study is to know the result on the impact of social media usage of

grade12 students’ behavior. Although social media allows students to be more

flexible in their learning, enhance innovations, and solidify interpersonal

relationships, these can also have negative implications for students by trying to

divert their attention away from the learning process, reducing physical social

interaction, and making them potentially addictive. Students' social conduct and

academic practices have shifted due to their excessive usage of social media

technologies. With so many students utilizing social media on a regular basis, there

is a strong need to study the ways in which social media is affecting students.

The researchers employed a special theory called Uses and Gratification to

understand the consequences of social media addiction on the participants' behavior.

This theory explains why people use social media.

Year 1959, an American sociologist called Elihu Katz wrote an article claiming

that communication research was on the point of extinction because scientists were

only interested in the impact of the media on individuals. As a result, he argues that

research should focus on the usage of media. He also proposed the Uses and

Gratification Theory when he came up with the idea that people use the media to

their advantage. This theory was considered modern.

An example of research used the Uses and Gratification theory as a

theoretical framework is the Social Media Addiction among Students of the University

of Ghana by Akua Adoasi Out (2015). This research looks at the prevalence of social

media addiction among University of Ghana students. This theory states that users

of media rely on it to fulfill requirements and, as a result, develop thoughts with it.

This will be used to explain how University of Ghana students use social media and

whether they have formed dependency on it.

The Uses and Gratification Theory was chosen by the researchers because it

explains why students seek out different social media platforms to gratify their

interests and provide enjoyment. Additionally, but instead of focusing on what media

does to people, this theory information about what people do with media. As a

result, the Uses and Gratification Theory will be very useful for the study, which aims

to determine the consequences of social media addiction on students' school

behavior.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Social media has an undeniable global presence. Social media has ushered in

a new era of communication amongst social network groupings such as family,

friends. It allows people to connect with others who share their interests and

opinions. Because of the gratifications gained from its use, social media may have a

negative impact on human behavior, and studies in other parts of the world have

found it to be potentially addictive.

As a result, by asking some students from grade 12 (HUMSS, HE AND ICT) of

Infanta Integrated School, this study aimed to investigate addiction among social

media users in Gade12. The goal of the study was to find out which social media

sites people use, what they use it for, and how these addictions affect their

behavior.

HYPHOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

Research Hypothesis
The following hypothesis are generated by the Researcher and was tested in this

study:

1. Student's addictiveness to social network has no significant influence on their

behavioral.

2. Student's exposure to social media network has no significant on students’

behavioral.

3. Use of social media do not have significantly influence on the behavioral of the

student in Infanta Integrated School.

4. There is no significant different between male and female student usage of social

media network.

5. Age does not have significant influence on the use of social media.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to see how social media addiction affects the conduct of

Grade 12 Senior High School Students at Infanta Integrated School throughout the

School Year 2021-2022.

This research aimed to answer the following question:

i) Profile of the Respondents:

A. Name(optional)

B. Age

C. Gender

ii) Initial Background of participants to social media in terms of:

(a) Social Media Platform they frequently use

iii) Possible behavior that may occur when participant abuse the usage of

social media?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Students will have awareness of the implications of social media addiction on

their behavior because of this study. They can also be educated and practice

responsible use of social media.

This research will assist parents of the students in understanding the nature

of why their children are dependent on social media. They will be capable of creating

some prevention action based on the result of this research to help their kids avoid

usage of social media.

This research could help co-researchers in gathering research ideas and

information. Therefore, the findings of the study may be beneficial to them as they

continue their research. Future researchers may learn from this study because it will

serve as a framework for their work. It also provides them with the appropriate

recommendations for improving their study due to the information and data

gathered through this study.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

The students' experience of media platforms was limited to the sites they use,

such as Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram as well as how often they used them.

Furthermore, the effects of social media on student behavior are restricted to

participants' tardiness, depression, and withdrawal from personal connections.

For the school year 2021-2022, this study focused on the students'

background of social media use and its consequences on their behaviors at selected

students from grade 12 of Infanta integrated School. The students come from

Humanities and Social Science, Home Economics and Information and

Communication Technology.

CHAPTER II

BACKGROUND

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This study focuses on the participants' social media backgrounds and

potential behaviors because of their use of social media. Everyone’s life has been

linked with social media. Considering all the positive features of social media use, it

has negative consequences, particularly for those who do not know how to control

or can use social media responsibly. It has an impact on their conduct and

interpersonal connections; students are easily distracted, which leads to laziness.

Students' social media addiction has been shown to have a variety of causes,

effects, and expressions. Many explanations for social media addiction have been

discovered in previous studies. These include a lack of friends, the social necessity of

social media, a sense of fulfillment, a fear of missing out, and the integration of

social media and everyday life (Aksoy,2018).

The first significant variable in this research is the students' knowledge or

experience with social media. Staying connected and up to date, as well as engaging

to our society and being creative, requires the use of social media platforms. Many

students take out social networking sites to widen their own learning network and

find resources. In recent years, access to and use of social media has exploded.
From Facebook to Snapchat to Twitter and beyond, social media and social networks

are becoming an increasingly crucial aspect of how we interact and engage daily.

The sub-variables include the platform they use, such as Facebook, YouTube,

Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Twitter, as well as how often they use

it. People use social media platforms to stay in touch with friends, pass the time,

share ideas, and simplify their lives. The social media environment in early 2018 is

marked by a combination of long-standing trends and newly emerging concepts,

including a new Survey of US adults according to a new Pew Research Center

survey of U.S. As social media dominate the world year 2012, Facebook and

YouTube are the most useful platforms. This landscape is dominated by Facebook

and YouTube, which are used by significant majorities of American citizens. Younger

Americans (particularly those between the ages of 18 and 24) stand out for adopting

and utilizing a multitude of platforms. Snapchat is used by 78 percent of 18- to 24-

year-olds, with the majority of individuals using it. The portal is visited several times

per day by 71% of users. Similarly, 71% of this age group in the United States

currently uses Instagram, with over half of them using it daily. Twitter is used by

45% of people. This landscape is dominated by Facebook and YouTube, which are

used by significant majorities of American citizens. Younger Americans (particularly

those between the ages of 18 and 24) stand out for adopting and utilizing a

multitude of platforms. Snapchat is used by 78 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds, with

the majority of individuals using it. The portal is visited several times per day by

71% of users. Similarly, 71% of this age group in the United States currently uses

Instagram, with over half of them using it daily. Twitter is used by 45% of people.

This is according to journal written by Aaron Smith and Monica Anderson (2018).
Students' mental health and academic performance are both harmed by social media

addiction (Hu et al., 2019). Brown distinguishes the various social media effects.

Depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, motivational loss, lack of self-control,

overreacting, and a hive mind are all symptoms of this condition. It includes

checking your social media accounts first thing in the morning, being anxious if you

can't check your social media, spending a lot of time overthinking and planning your

posts, thinking your phone buzzed when it didn't, and neglecting your own hobbies

in favor of scrolling.

The generation today depend on their lives in social media to the point that

they will share even a private matter.

The other variable of this research is the possible Behavior that may student

adopt because of too much usage of social media. Many people claim that social

media is a large part of daily life, according to a journal written by Hope Gillette and

Robyn Russell (2021) and medically reviewed by Danielle Wade, LCSW. You're not

alone if you grab your phone first thing in the morning to check Twitter for the latest

information. In the United States, almost 72 percent of people utilize at least one

social media platform. Over 223 million individuals are reading their social media

accounts. Many things influence how you respond to social media. If you have a

mental health problem, such as an anxiety disorder, your usage of social media may

exacerbate your symptoms. In general, if you suffer from social anxiety, some

features of social media may be beneficial to you. However, it's more possible that

some of your symptoms will worsen.

Participants' tardiness, depression, and social anxiety are some of the sub-

variables. Procrastination, according to Richtel (2010), is the act of deferring a task

to a later day or time. "Students have always had to deal with diversions and time

wasters," he continued. Computers and cellphones, on the other hand, present a

significant new obstacle to attention and learning because of the constant stream of

stimuli they provide." Procrastination is a consequence of your decision; you have

the option of doing or not doing something. Edward De Bono avoids social media

because he "doesn't want to be pressured by knowledge," according to him. He

claims that social media contributes to "laziness." We just think we'll get more

information and won't need to come up with ideas because someone else will, we

won't need to look at the data because we'll just look at what someone else has

said, and so on. Second variable is Depression, it is a serious medical condition that

affects how you feel, think, and act. It's also treatable, thankfully. Sadness and/or a

loss of interest in previously appreciated activities are symptoms of depression. It

can cause a wide range of mental and physical issues, as well as a reduction in your

capacity to operate at work and at home. According to the American Psychiatric

Association, depression affects one in every 15 adults (6.7 percent) each year. One

in every six people (16.6%) will suffer from depression at some point in their lives.

Depression can strike at any age, but it is most common in the late teens and early

twenties. Women are more susceptible to depression than males. According to some

research, one-third of women will have a significant depressive episode over their

lives. When first-degree relatives (parents/children/siblings) suffer from depression,

there is a high degree of heritability (about 40%). Lastly, the withdrawal of personal

interactions is the third sub-variable. According to Richtel (2010), social networking

has caused us to have fewer interactions with the people we associate with. Because

the majority of people have access to social media at any time via their cellphones,

this problem will only get worse as more people purchase smartphones. Teenagers

don't have many personal interactions with others since they rely on social media to

remain in touch. This separation may prevent students from developing important

social skills that they will require early in adulthood.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Design/method

The study conducted a non-experimental research design to evaluate the

phenomenon of social media addiction among IIS Grade 12 students. We are using

the quantitative research method since we're seeking for quantitative information on

how many grade 12 students are addicted to social media.

Population and Sampling Procedure

The population of this study are some of grade 12 students from IIS. There

are 10 students from Humanities and Social Sciences, 10 students also from

Information and Communication Technology and 10 students from 2 sections of

Home Economics also, with total of 30 students. This study is non-probability

sampling since non all the students will participate to this research.

Instruments

For this study, a survey questionnaire through online will be used to collect

the information that we needed from the students. This questionnaire will be having
3 sections; the Yes or No, multiple choice and the last part is for participant’s opinion

regarding to the questions.

Data Gathering Procedure

This study is a quantitative research, and we will use descriptive statistical

analysis to summarize all the data. The researchers will collect data by conducting

an online survey and communicating the results to the participants via the internet.

Before giving the respondents the questionnaires, we will ask them if it is okay for

them to fill them out and explain what our issue is about so that they have a general

sense of what to expect when they answer. Following that, we will distribute

questionnaires to each student and wait for them to complete them.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Data obtained from the survey that we conducted and then translate the raw

data into frequencies and percentages to help present the data in the form of tables

and charts which were then analyzed based on the research questions and later

discussed to arrive at conclusions.

The researcher uses a statistical tool to analyze the data gathered. To

calculate the percentage, the researcher se the formula:

P=FNx100

where:

P= Percentage

F= Frequency
N= total number of Population

Chapter V
SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

SUMMARY

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of social media usage

on the behavior of grade 12 students at Infanta Integrated School throughout the

school year 2021-2022. To uncover the effects of the factors, this study used non-

experimental research using the checklist questionnaire approach. The

questionnaires were duplicated and sent to 30 Infanta Integrated School grade 12

students from HUMSS, ICT, and HE.

This study sought to answer the questions:

- HOW MANY SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS DO YOU HAVE?

- HOW MANY TIMES A DAY DO YOU OPEN YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA?

- SPECIFIC SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS FREQUENTLY USE?

- HOW MANY HOURS YOU SPEND IN USING SOCIAL MEDIA A DAY?

- What possible behavior that may occur when participant abuse the usage of social

media?

The researchers analyzed the collected data using percentage after distributing the

questionnaires. The information was grouped and presented using a pie graph.

FINDINGS
In the findings, most of the respondents are female with 67% while there are

33% male. The majority of the respondents 60% were 18 years old, 30% are 17,7%

of 19 and 3% of 20 above with 10 males and 20 females picked among HUMSS, ICT,

and HE students.

The researchers found out that 83% of the respondents using 1 to 3 social

media accounts only, while 10% of them were having 4-6 accounts. No one have 7

to 9 accounts but having more than 10. Most of them (74%) open their social media

1 to 10 times a day while some of the respondents answered every other day

(13%), same with the percentage of the respondents who answered more than 10

times. 49% of the respondents mostly use Facebook. 41% of them only use

messenger. Only 5% answered Instagram, but 7% choose other including Tiktok

and Tachiyomi Reddit YouTube. More than half of the respondents (57%) usually

open their social media accounts only 1 to 3 hours a day, while 23% of the

respondents answered 4 to 7 hours. Both 8 to 10 hours and 10 above having 10%

only.

In the survey, the most possible behavior that may occur because of social

media addiction to grade12 students is laziness with 62%, to be followed by

depression/ anxiety with 17%. 12% of the respondents choose withdrawal of

interaction and 9% pick other including lack of sleep and stress eating. Almost half

of the respondents (49%) says that time management is the main effect of social

media addiction. 33% of them can’t limit themselves, 11% of them is because of

laziness. Some of the respondents (7%) answered other effects, like cyber bullying,

lack of sleep, anxiety and less of social interaction. Also in others, someone says that

there is positive effect of using social media if you will use it properly.
CONCLUSION

There is no evidence that students are completely addicted on social media.

They are using their phones but not for social media.

Students believe that too much use of social media can affect students’

behavior, but at this point there is no evidence if it is only negative effects because

of the opinions that is divided as to whether it is positive or negative.

Students believe that time management is the main reason of being social

media addict.

RECOMMENDATION

The focus of the study is the impact of social media usage among grade 12 students’

behavior. The recommendations of the researchers are based on the summary of

the study and conclusion.

 For the students - Know how to limit yourself on using social media due to

its effect on the behavior.

 For the parents- Parents should ensure that their children are focused on

their studies.

 For the teachers- Make sure that the students are not using their phones

while school hours, it will help them to focus more on their studies.

 For the future researcher- conduct this study with more participants, takes
time to focus on the things conduct this study with a wider range of
participants, take time to focus on the things that we may have missed, use
other statistical tools to reveal correlation between the two variables and use
this study as a basis and background to help in doing a study connecting to
the effects of google search in the academic behavior of students.
