Technology is important because it makes you feel more secure with every area in life
for both personal and business reasons. With technology advancing more people are able to
have access to supplies such as fresh water and food because technology can help deliver
those items to people that otherwise couldn't get it.

The impact of technology is magnified in the field of communication where major

changes have occurred in recent years. Through technology many gadgets are invented
specially used now a days in our daily communication such as desktop and laptop computer.
In this module you will know more about:
♦ define what computer;
♦ define what is desktop and laptop computer and how do they differ;
♦identify the parts of a desktop computer and its characteristics;
1
♦explain how important is a computer now a day.

Much of the world today has become an information society. Information society
refers to a group of people such as a city or country, in which information is rapidly created,
processed and shared. This means that information can now be encoded or changed into a
form that machines can “understand”. And it can be processed or analyzed or computed and
transmitted (sent) to others in lesser time. This culture of an information society is made
possible by a wonderful machine called computer.

Computer- an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form,
according to instructions given to it in a variable program.

Computers today do a lot of things. In homes, tiny computers embedded in electric

appliances turn the television on and off and switch channels, or control the temperature of
the refrigerator.

Knowing how to use computers is now expected of all college graduates. In fact, the
use of computers is now being taught in many schools. A computer
literate person (with knowledge of computers) has greater chances
of being employed. Unfortunately, some people still have
cyberphobia (fear of computers). They still look at computers as
frightening and too complicated to operate. Unlike other phobias,
however, cyberphobia is easy to cure. And that is through
education. Studying this lesson is a good start.

The illustration on shows in the left side is what a personal computer

(PC) looks like. Also known as a desktop computer, the PC is the
most popular form of computer.

Desktop Computer is a personal computer designed for regular use

at a single location on or near a desk or table due to its size and power requirements. It also
includes the processor, which can be a micro tower or minitower designed to fit under the
desk or a unit that goes on top of the desk.

Origin of Desktop Computer

-prior to the widespread use of microprocessors, a computer that could fit on a desk was
considered remarkably small; the type of computers most commonly used
were minicomputers, which were themselves desk-sized. Early computers took up the space
of a whole room. Minicomputers generally fit into one or a few refrigerator-sized racks. It
was not until the 1970s when fully programmable computers appeared that could fit entirely
on top of a desk.
Types of Desktop Computer
5
Full-sized Desktop Computer- are
characterized by separate display and processing
components. These components are connected to
each other by cables or wireless connections. They
often come in a tower form factor. These computers
are easy to customize and upgrade per user
requirements, e.g. by expansion card.

All-in-One Desktop Computer- integrates the system's internal

components into the same case as the display, thus occupying a
smaller footprint (with fewer cables) than desktops that incorporate a
tower. The all-in-one form factor was popular during the early 1980s
for personal computers intended for professional use such as the
Kaypro II, Osborne 1, TRS-80 Model II and Compaq Portable. These
systems were most often connected to a television set for display.
Example of this desktop computer is the iMac G4.

Compact Desktop Computer- are reduced in physical

proportions compared to full-sized desktops. They are typically small-
sized, inexpensive, low-power computers designed for basic tasks such
as web browsing, accessing web-based applications, document
processing, and audio/video playback. A nettop is an example of a
compact desktop.

Home Theater Desktop Computer- these desktops are

connected to home entertainment systems and typically used for
amusement purpose. They come with high definition display,
video graphics, surround sound and TV tuner systems to
complement typical PC features.

Thin Clients- Over time some traditional desktop computers have been
replaced with thin clients utilizing off-site computing solutions like the
cloud.[36] As more services and applications are served over the internet
from off-site servers, local computing needs decrease, this drives desktop
computers to be smaller, cheaper, and need less powerful hardware.
Basic Parts of a Desktop Computer (Personal Computer)

6
The basic parts of a desktop computer are the computer case, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and
power cord. Each part plays an important role whenever you use a computer.

Computer Monitor- works with Case- the metal and plastic box

and text on the screen. central processing unit (CPU), the power
supply, and more. It lets you point to
objects on the
screen, click on
them, and
move them.

Keyboard- is used to
encode (input) information that the Power Cord- is the link between the power
computer can “understand”. A computer outlet and the power supply unit in the
user must know how to type data or computer casing. If the power cord is not
information using the keyboard. plugged in, the computer will not power on.

Comparison of Desktop Computer with Laptop Computer

Desktops have an advantage over laptops in that the spare parts and extensions tend to be standardized,
resulting in lower prices and greater availability. Desktops have several standardized expansion slots, like conventional
PCI or PCI Express, while laptops only tend to have one mini-PCI slot and one PC Card slot (or Express Card slot).
Another advantage of the desktop is that (apart from environmental concerns) power consumption is not as critical as
in laptop computers because the desktop is exclusively powered from the wall socket. Desktop computers also provide
more space for cooling fans and vents to dissipate heat, allowing enthusiasts to overclock with less risk. Laptop
computers, conversely, offer portability that desktop systems (including small form factor and all-in-one desktops)
cannot due to their compact size and clamshell design. Desktop computers use more power than a laptop. They have
to power a higher wattage power supply, multiple components inside the computer, and a monitor. Laptop computers
use less power than a desktop computer. Smaller components mean less power is needed to make them work.
