FME21L-M Group 8 Activity No. 9

This document describes an experiment to test the performance of pumps arranged in series and parallel configurations. It outlines the objectives to understand the basic operation and applications of series and parallel pump units. Intended learning outcomes are explained for students to compare the efficiency and computations of these arrangements. The main body poses questions about the characteristics of series vs parallel pumps and provides solutions for calculating the power output under single pump, series, and parallel conditions. Graphs are presented comparing the different pump curves. The conclusion reinforces that series pumps increase discharge pressure while maintaining equal flow, and parallel pumps allow a wider flow range than a single pump. References for further information are also provided.

A. Objectives:
The discussion aims the student to:
1.To determine the basic operation and application of a series and parallel
pump unit.
2.To reinforce the understanding of the basic design and computation of a
pump unit.

B. Intended Learning Outcomes:

The students shall be able to:
1. Explain fundamental principles of basic series and parallel pump unit.
2. Identify the efficiency, computation and applications of basic series and
parallel operating pump unit.

C. Questions & Problem Solving

1. Characteristic and comparison of series and Parallel Pump. (Apply the

concept of pump performance curve)

Series- Series pumping can be onsidered as a series of centrifugal pumps arranged

to supply one another in series and thus progressively increase the discharge
pressure.

The discharge of one pump feeds the suction of the second pump in a series
operation. The flow through all of the pumps is equal when two or more pumps are
operated in series. If there are no side streams, whatever passes through one pump
must also flow through the next pump in the series.

Parallel - For systems with significantly changing flow requirements, a configuration
that permits a broader range of flow than would be achievable with a single constant
speed pump. In most cases, only three or four pumps are running in parallel.

In terms of flow, in a parallel arrangement, each pump provides its value to the equivalent,
whereas in a series setup, both pumps share the flow.

2. Solve the problem:

Find the power output of the pump given the ff conditions:

a. Single Pump Alone
b. Pump 1 and Pump 2 are design in series
c. Pump 1 and Pump 2 are design in parallel.
Sketch a pump curve for the three conditions. (One curve for the three
conditions)

D. Conclusion:

In series operation, the discharge of one pump feeds the suction of a second pump.
When two or more pumps are operated in series, the flow through all of the pumps is
equal. Since whatever flows through one pump has to flow through the next pump in
series, provided there are no side streams. In pump curves in series, if pumps are used
in series in a system a combined pump curve can be generated analogous to the
combined curve, though the combined curve is generated differently. In Parallel, the
primary purpose of operating pumps in parallel is to allow a wider range of flow than
would be possible with a single fixed speed pump for systems with widely carrying flow
demand.
