I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, the students will be able to:
1. Distinguish among the different types and sources of start-up ideas.
2. Use innovative thinking to generate ideas for high-potential start-ups.
3. Describe external and internal analyses that might shape the selection of venture
opportunities.
4. Know how to screen business ideas to identify those with the greatest potential.

II. SUBJECT MATTER


Topic: Generating a Business Idea
Reference: Entrepreneurship book for SHS by J.
Longenecker, J. Petty, et. al., pp. 33-55
Instructional Materials: Manila paper, Pentel pen

III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance
4. Review of the Previous Topic
A student will be asked to give a recall on the previous lesson.

B. Lesson Procedure
1. Activity – Group Activity
1. The teacher groups the students into six (6).
2. Each group will choose their leader and secretary.
3. The teacher gives the topic for each group.
Group 1 – Types and Common Sources of Startup Ideas
Group 2 – Using Innovative Thinking to Generate Business Ideas
Group 3 – Using Internal Analysis to Asses New Business Ideas (Outside-In
Analysis)
Group 4 – Using External Analysis to Asses New Business Ideas (Inside-Out
Analysis)
Group 5 – Integrating Internal and External Analyses
Group 6 – Screening New Business Ideas
4. Each group will study their given topic.
5. Each group will prepare a report that will be written on a Manila paper.
6. Each group will prepare also a summary out of the report.
7. A representative from the group will report their work in the class.
8. This activity is good for 20 minutes.

Group 1
 What are the three (3) basic types of startup ideas?
 What are the most common sources of inspiration for startup ideas?
Group 2
 What are the innovative ways in generating a business idea?
 Which of these ways do you think you will use in generating your own business
idea? Why?
Group 3
 What are some ways in which each trend in the general environment might affect
a small business?
 In your opinion, in the factors that shape competition in an industry, which of
these factors will have the greatest impact on the industry prices and profits?
Group 4
 How are tangible and intangible resources related to a venture’s capabilities?
 How are capabilities linked to core competencies?
Group 5
 What is a SWOT Analysis?
 How can SWOT Analysis help the entrepreneur match opportunities in the
external environment with organizational capabilities?
Group 6
 Under what circumstances is a new business idea screening process useful?
Why?
 What are the major factors that should be considered when screening new
business ideas?

3. Abstraction
The teacher will sum up the lesson.

4. Application
The teacher groups the students for their business plan project. The members
of the group will brainstorm as to what business they will undertake. Each group will
generate a business idea. Each group will present their business idea.

IV. EVALUATION
Write your answers in a ½ sheet of paper (crosswise).
1. Give the 3 types of startup ideas. - 3 points
2. Give 1 common source of startup idea. - 2 point
3. What is outside-in analysis? - 5 points
4. What is inside-out analysis? - 5 points

V. ASSIGNMENT
Study on the business plan, its purposes and importance.
