Chapter 4 2 Definite Integral

The document discusses definite integrals and their applications. It defines the definite integral as the limit of Riemann sums that can be used to find the area under a curve between bounds. Examples are provided to demonstrate approximating areas using Riemann sums with different endpoint choices. The fundamental theorem of calculus and properties of definite integrals are also outlined. Applications to finding areas between curves are then described through integrals.

The Area problem

Find the area of the region S that lies under the curve
y = f (x) from a to b, i.e. S is bounded by the graph of a
continuous function y = f (x), (f (x) ≥ 0), x axis, x = a,
x = b.

Definite integral

Definite integral
If f is defined on [a, b], we divide [a, b] into n subintervals
of equal width ∆x = b−a n . x0 = a, x1 , x2 , · · · , xn = b, and
xi∗ ∈ [xi−1 , xi ]. Then, the definite integral of f from a to
b is

f (x)dx = limn→∞ Σni=1 f (xi∗ )∆x

If it does exist, we say that f is integrable on [a, b].

Theorem
If f (x) is continuous on [a, b], or if f has only a finite
number of jump discontinuities, then f is integrable on
[a, b].
