b. Development

Reflecting Content
The most immediate part of a speaker's message is the content. It refers to the aspects dealing with
information, actions, events and experiences. The readers focus on the content of what a speaker is
conveying, including thoughts, ideas, beliefs, facts, data, etc
Using the content of the editorial cartoon earlier, its message can be:
1. Our health workers are bound by unity while battling against covid-19.
• It is clearly illustrated that they are united in bringing up the flag which symbolizes the health
workers themselves.
Reflecting Feelings
It involves expressing in your own words the essential emotions strongly implied in the text either
verbally or non-verbally. Its purpose is to bring vaguely expressed feelings into clearer awareness.

A skilled reader will be able to reflect a speaker's feelings from verbal and non-verbal cues.
He/she has the ability to identify such feelings both from the words and actions descriptively
used by the writer such as body language, facial expressions, hand gestures, and the likes.

1. Verbal Cue “Our health workers should not

bear the burden of deciding who lives and who dies. If the health system collapses, it is ultimately
our poor who are most compromised. In the end, winning the war against COVID-19 relies heavily
on being able to keep our health system capacitated to address the needs of all Filipinos.”
This statement means that our health workers are overly exhausted due to the weight of
their jobs during this pandemic crisis and they begged for time out from over working.
2. Non-verbal Cue
The person in the picture wears exhausted face and body while resting on the hospital
pathway/floor. Her body language depicts the over-all exhaustion that our health workers around the
globe feel nowadays.
Reflecting Meaning
It allows the reader to reflect the speaker's experiences and emotional response to those
experiences. The skill involves understanding and reflecting both the feelings and the related
content; thus, linking together the two components is necessary.
Study the images in column A. Match them with their reflected emotions in column B. Write
the word or the emotion as your answer.

WEEK 2

Introduction

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

A. Evaluate the validity of a text
B. Use evidence to support claims in arguments.

Learning Task # 1: Match the following definition or description in Colum A to Column B. Write the
letter of your choice in a piece of paper.

A B
1.consists of facts, statistics, experiences A. reason
2. general statement that supports a claim B. validity
3. reasons and evidence that are acceptable C. evidence
4.evidence that stands alone to prove an argument D. direct
5. facts that are taken together to lead a conclusion E. indirect
F. support

Development

Let us recall and be familiar with the following terms:

CLAIM, CITE, EVIDENCE, and VALIDITY

Our next task is to read the following scenario. It is an example of an argument.

Jason’s family is going to the mall, but he doesn’t want to go. He argues that he should be allowed to stay
home and says that his friend Ray often stays at home alone.

Based on the argument and evidence in the scenario, should Jayson be allowed to stay at home? You
have two minutes to think. Write your answer on a piece of paper. Reserve your answer for the discussion
later.

1. What makes a claim valid?

If you answered one of these: It is true. It is on topic. It is reasonable. It is logical. It can be supported. It is
important. You’re on the right track, correct.

2. What is evidence?

Great! Evidence is a proof. It is the basis of your belief, an indication of something; the evidence is a
support, and these are facts.
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education

3. From the answers, we have in questions 1 and 2, now, how can we define valid evidence?

Valid Evidence is always true. It is reasonable information based on fact and supports an argument.

4. How can we ensure that we have valid evidence?

When we cite the source of our proof or provide an acceptable example to support our claim.

Now, let us check your answer from the scenario given at the beginning of this lesson. If you want to
change your answers you may do so. Please share your answers now. Let us analyze the scenario.

Jason’s family is going to the mall, but he doesn’t want to go. He argues that he should be allowed
to stay home and says that his friend Ray often stays at home alone.

Question: Was Jayson able to provide valid evidence on his claim to support his argument for staying home
alone? Yes or No? Explain your answer.

You are right. Unfortunately, Jayson failed to provide valid evidence. His reason was not enough.
He missed citing an acceptable source or example to support his claim. In this scenario, it describes that a
person’s age does not determine whether he or she is capable of staying home alone. Just because Ray
can stay home alone; it does not mean that Jayson can do it as well. It was not an acceptable reason.

Kinds of Evidence in an Argument

1. Direct Evidence- any piece of evidence that stands alone to prove an argument.

Example: If a witness says he saw the accused set fire to a building.

2. Indirect/Circumstantial Evidence – a set of facts that, when taken together, lead to the desired
conclusion.

Example: If he saw the accused sneakily leaving the building just before the fire broke out.

Where can we get these pieces of evidence?

Yes, when we use evidence in your argument, be sure it comes from a reliable source. Possible
sources of evidence are newspapers, magazines, official documents, historical papers, or statements made
by trustworthy public officials or private persons.

But when you cite a person’s statement as evidence, be sure that the source is capable of giving
the evidence, that he/she has a reputation for honesty and accuracy, and that he/she does not have pre-
judgment.

How about with news? How do we check for the validity of the news we read and hear via
television, radio, and social media?

Correct! We have to look for the source. Is it real news? Or fake news?

In this age of technology, news spreads fast. When a story is big news, it is often quick to spread.
There is a lot of fake news coming around. But we should be careful about sharing this news because we
will be responsible for that information.

How can we easily identify whether we are reading real or fake news?
Yes, we must always check for reliable sources cited in the news.
Bonus Tip: Remember to do these things on how to find text evidence. You need to

PROVE IT.
P – Passage/Paragraph/Page
R – Reference
O – Offer support
V – View of Author
E – Eye can see it
I – Inference
T – Text Feature

PASSAGE – the evidence must be found somewhere in the passage

(It could be in just one paragraph, several places throughout the passage, sometimes the best
supporting piece of evidence comes later in the text.)
REFERENCE – the specific location of the text
(It says in paragraph ___ on page ____, that….)
OFFER SUPPORT – the connection between the question and the evidence
(I know because…/The reason I think ____ is because _______.)
VIEW OF AUTHOR – provides the author’s perspective on the topic
(The author stated that…/.”For instance, the author says…”)
EYES CAN SEE IT – something that is seen physically in the text
(In the text, it explicitly states…/ The text said….)
INFERENCE – be a reading detective; use clues from the text to figure something not stated in
the text
(I can infer from ______ that _______.)
TEXT FEATURES – help the reader understand the text. Watch out for the titles, headings,
charts, tables, graphs, illustrations, etc.
(The illustration shows…/The graph showed…/Based on the section…/According to the
title…)

Other ways you can validate the reliability and trustworthiness of a text is the C.R.A.A.P.
method, which stands for:
⮚ CURRENCY is the timeliness of the information
⮚ RELEVANCE is the importance of the information for your needs.
⮚ AUTHORITY is the source of information.
⮚ ACCURACY is the reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of
information
⮚ PURPOSE is the reason the information exists

Let’s answer the following questions:

1. How can you tell if something or someone tells you a fact or fiction?

Yes, by going online to check the primary source of the information or by consulting authority.

2. What primary sources might be credible?

Good. Someone who experienced a situation personally, a university research, the Statistics office
for census, police department and some other might be credible.

3. Are newspapers and television news always valid?

Right! Usually, but it’s always good to examine the source in a story to determine if they have a
vested interest in promoting their viewpoint for example selling an idea or an item.

4. Is the internet always a good source of factual information? Why or Why not?

Precisely! Some information that is passed through cyberspace is opinion, based on very few facts.
Verify first the information and check valid sources before forwarding information.

Engagement:

Learning Task #2: This time, let us try to practice knowledge on the validity of evidence in each statement.
