Answer the following questions. Use Module 2 as your reference especially for the table
describe for each question.
1. Visit several e-commerce sites, not including those mentioned in this chapter,
and evaluate the effectiveness of the sites according to the eight basic
criteria/functionalities listed in Table in this module. Choose one site you feel
does an excellent job on all the aspects of an effective site and create a
PowerPoint or similar presentation, including screen shots, to support your
choice. 15 pts
- Of all the e-commerce websites I have visited, Samsung is the one that impressed me the
most. Right off the bat, the eye-catching, interactive and well-organized graphic with the
display of the newest Samsung model caught my attention. Samsung increasingly realized the
need to be the best in product design. The text which contains only key information or message
is always short and legible. In terms of functionality, it takes a millisecond to get access to
this simply but professionally established website. Apple always showcases a giant picture of
the latest model to direct customers towards it. The homepage contains mostly vivid pictures of
different kinds of products with the most prominent information going along with. However, if
customers are interested in a certain product, they can simply click anywhere on the picture that
attaches to that product to get more detailed information. Alternatively, links to all products
which are shown by their own names are listed on top of the homepage which showcases the
ease of use and redundant navigation of Samsung website. Another feature that makes it
very informational is that you can compare different models of a certain product side by side to
make it more convenient for customers to make the decision. When customers lock the
purchase in their mind, it takes a few clicks to finish the purchasing process with all features that
customers wish. Backed by innovation and cutting-edge technology, the latest, trendiest and
coolest designs have uniquely positioned Samsung in both the market and consumers’ minds.
With cut-throat competition, the visual treat of Samsung’s products has been a marked
differentiator from its rivals. Samsung also started comprehensive training courses for all its
design employees to learn the latest trends in designing, along with courses on ergonomics and
mechanical engineering. By looking at art, culture and sculpture of many countries, the design
lab trained its design engineers to be the best. Nonetheless, Samsung has indeed come a long
way in becoming the huge global technology behemoth that it is today. If it is able to apply
the above brand strategies to its business, there will be no doubt in its potential to take over
Apple as the world’s biggest technology brand, maker and distributor. It is up the owners and C-
suite to take bold and daring decisions to make it happen.
2. Imagine that you are in charge of developing a fast-growing startup’s e-
commerce presence. Consider your options for building the company’s e-
commerce presence in-house with existing staff, or outsourcing the entire
operation. Decide which strategy you believe is in your company’s best interest
and create a brief presentation outlining your position. Why choose that
approach? And what are the estimated associated costs, compared with the
alternative? (You’ll need to make some educated guesses here—don’t worry
about being exact.) 15 pts
- Instead of outsourcing every aspect of the business, I would build the startup with the help of
current employees. If my firm is in charge of that operation, I want to demonstrate the worth and
quality of my business and I do not want to entrust my brand's reputation to anybody else. If I
owned a business of this nature, I would make sure I was surrounded by experts who could do
a great job and meet the needs of our clients. It makes sense for businesses to outsource the
creation of the components they need to construct a computer, but they do not outsource the
entire operation. Outsourcing should be used for uncomplicated operations. As the head of
information technology for a start-up e-commerce business experiencing rapid growth, it is very
common to have to choose between hiring existing workers to create the site in-house and
outsourcing the entire process because both options have benefits and drawbacks. If the
development is carried out internally, it will be simple for a company to move forward with
system development and track the expansion of the entire system. Plans are simply modifiable,
and the organization's managers and development division will have complete control over the
system's development and growth. If the development is carried out through an outsourcing
operation, it will be challenging for a company to maintain total control over the system since
they will need to pre-plan everything, consult with their advisors, and always come up with a
cost agreement. This will take time. I would thus wish to choose the in-house development
technique as the head of information technology. Additionally, it aids in timely preparation of the
activities and cost-benefit analysis. The organization will be in charge of the team and the
system's expense. With the aid of this strategy, the organization will be able to plan current
versions of various features and system capabilities and appropriately implement them so that
they may be added to the system on schedule. If my staff completed the task, we would have
superior results, direct control over the entire process, and touch with the client. However, if the
task is outsourced, the company will work quickly to finish it so they can get paid, and you don't
want your business to be seen as one that doesn't value its clients. If we outsource the work, we
might be able to make more money, build more websites for other businesses, and possibly
save some money, but in the long term, our company's reputation would suffer and no one
would hire us.
3. Choose two e-commerce software packages and prepare an evaluation chart
that rates the packages on the key factors discussed in the section “Choosing an
E-commerce Software Platform.” Which package would you choose if you were
developing a website of the type described in this chapter, and why? 15 pts
- I would choose the Wix stores because it offers a few different ways to create your own free
website, so you can choose the creation process that works best for you. Both Wix and
GoDaddy target a similar audience such as personal users, small to medium-sized businesses,
and modest online stores. Though both platforms offer good website-building features, Wix is
hands down the stronger of the two due to its greater variety of highly polished features. With
easy customization, user-friendly interfacing, and different products that appeal to all levels of
users, Wix really has it all. Adding to this, they also offer a free forever plan that GoDaddy
doesn’t. Wix is a more powerful builder than GoDaddy, offering complete creative control and
providing better quality features and more scalable plans. It’s more expensive, though, and its
wealth of customization options can make it overwhelming for beginners. Wix offers a
professional ecommerce website builder that helps you launch your ecommerce business
quickly and successfully. Build your ecommerce website with Wix and get everything you need
to grow and scale a successful online business, from thoughtful website design to must-have
ecommerce features, to advanced ecommerce solutions. Wix Stores gives you all the tools you
need to create a sleek, professional online store and grow your ecommerce business. You can
display your products in stunning galleries, accept secured checkout, sell on multiple sales
channels, and add drop shipping products to your store. Wix store is really excellent in terms of
developing a website because it is a website-building platform that is both free and user-friendly.
Our user-friendly technology and powerful built-in features empower our users to create
professional websites that look great on any device. Wix, on the other hand, offers more than
just a website builder.
