2021 Sample Geog Level5 E

The candidate demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the geography curriculum content. In the paper 1 exemplar, the candidate provided detailed explanations for questions 2 and 5, clearly explaining concepts such as the formation of landforms and the greenhouse effect. The candidate also provided a detailed description of a tropical rainforest in question 8. In the paper 2 exemplar, the candidate correctly identified rock and reclamation materials in question 1 and provided a detailed explanation of how water influences mass wasting in question 5. The candidate communicated ideas clearly and logically, though could have provided more details in some responses.

- The candidate demonstrated a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the curriculum. He/she
communicated ideas and expressed his/her views concisely and logically.
- In Question 2, the candidate explained the formation of landform X in detail and the occurrence of earthquakes
clearly. He/she accurately gave ‘active plate movement’ as the cause of frequent earthquakes in the region. The
candidate clearly and logically explained the serious damage to town P in terms of the magnitude of the earthquake
and the building structure. Finally, the candidate interpreted the information and explained the physical factors that
hindered reconstruction in the area, and gave a clear judgement. He/she would have performed better if he/she had
considered the human constraints as well.
- In Question 5, the candidate clearly and systematically explained the trend in carbon dioxide emissions with
reference to the rising GDP per capita and the increasing demand for energy. The candidate analysed the
information and described the tendency for the temperature to rise along with increasing carbon dioxide emissions.
He/she explained the mechanism of the greenhouse effect in general, but some information was inaccurate, such
as carbon dioxide reflecting sunlight or solar radiation. The candidate clearly explained the adverse ecological
impacts but failed to further explain how the bleaching of the coral reef affected the economy of area X. He/she
explained the less relevant economic impact of ‘flooding of coastal areas’ instead. The candidate applied his/her
knowledge to the case of Australia and logically explained both the physical and human factors favourable to the
development of solar energy. The candidate also clearly pointed out that temperature anomalies were a global issue.
However, the discussion was one-sided, and the arguments relating to the shortcomings of solar energy were
irrelevant.
- In Question 8, the candidate gave quite a detailed account of the climate and the vegetation structure of a tropical
rainforest, showing the diversified habitats that nurture different organisms. In the second part, the candidate
systematically explained the impact of clear-cutting on climate, water, soil and living organisms. He/she would
have performed better if there had been more detail on how these changes reduce the complexity of the tropical
rainforest ecosystem.

- The candidate demonstrated comprehensive understanding of the curriculum content and communicated in a
logical manner, making extensive use of geographical terminology and concepts.
- In Question 1 (a), the candidate correctly identified rock type K and described its characteristics. He/she gave a
good account of how the well-jointed structure of granite facilitates the infiltration of rainwater and spheroidal
weathering, leading to the ‘rounding of corestones’. However, the candidate did not specifically explain the
decreasing degree of weathering with the increasing depth in zone M. In Question 1 (b), the candidate correctly
identified reclamation materials P and Q. He/she made good reference to Figure 1a by stating that material P could
easily been found in the ‘hills of Chek Lap Kok’. In Question 1 (c), the candidate made a comprehensive
comparison between reclamation material Q and marine sand fill with reference to their respective environmental
impacts.
- In Question 5, the candidate gave a detailed account of how heavy rainfall in Hong Kong increases pore water
pressure and reduces the friction of slope materials, leading to higher shear stress and lower shear strength, which
are conducive to mass wasting. He/she also explained the work of water on weathering producing a loose regolith.
In the second part, the candidate mentioned some relevant points when discussing the role of human activities that
affect the relationship between water and mass wasting, such as proper slope maintenance and making weep-holes
to reduce the infiltration of water. However, some of the ideas, like planting vegetation on slopes, were either
ambiguous or irrelevant to the discussion.
