Time Study

Time study is a process that involves directly observing and measuring the time it takes a qualified worker to complete individual elements of a manufacturing process using a timing device. The goal is to analyze the job to find the most efficient method in terms of time and effort. Key steps in time study include selecting a job to analyze, breaking it down into observable steps, timing a qualified worker performing each step multiple times, and establishing a standard time based on the data to measure performance.

Time Study-

Time study may be defined as “the art of observing and recording the time

required to do each detailed element of an industrial activity/operation.”

Time Study is a structured process of directly observing and measuring human

work using a timing device to establish the time required for completion of the

work by a qualified worker when working at a defined level of performance.

Time Study is the analysis of a specific job by a qualified worker in an effort to

find the most efficient method in terms of time and effort.

Time Study measures the time necessary for a job or task to be completed using

the best method.

Procedures of Time Study

 Select the work to be studied

 Observe the Step-by-Step Manufacturing Process.

 Decide on a Fixed Beginning and Ending Point.

 Obtain and record all the information available about the job, the operator

and the working conditions likely to affect the time study work

 Break the Manufacturing Process into Steps and Determine Their

Beginning and End Points.

 Subdivide the manufacturing operation into observable and distinct

component elements

 An element is a distinct part of a specified activity composed of one or

more fundamental motions selected

 for convenience of observation and timing

 Choose ‘acceptable’ operator/s for study

 Make direct observation of the work elements

 Record Your Data of time of each work element.

 Make a statistically adequate number of repeated measurements and

record each time

 Performance rate each element and record

 Analyse Data.

 Calculate the normal “time” and establish “allowances”

 Compute the Standard Time

 Improvise, if required
