Concept Paper

The document discusses a trash trap clean up project at the Pulangi Dam in Lumbayao, Valencia City. Drainages in the area had become clogged with garbage like plastic bottles, diapers, and unused items, causing flooding during heavy rainfall. The project aims to lessen water pollution, landslides, and flooding in the area by installing eco-friendly nets in the drainages to trap trash and prevent clogging. Over five weeks, the researcher will gather background information, conduct materials research, and execute the project with local volunteers and officials to evaluate if the trash traps prevent flooding and reduce disease.

Trash Trap: Clean up of Pulangi Dam in Lumbayao, Valencia City

Introduction
For a decade, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, which was
formed in January 1,1917, it has been protected and managing the Philippines
environment from its first foundation. The pulangi river is one of the major the
tributaries of the Rio Grande De Mindanao, an extensive river system in Mindanao,
Philippines. Humans use rivers for irrigation in agriculture, for drinking water, habitat
for aquamarine animals, for transportation, to produce electricity through
hydroelectric dams and for farming. Monitoring the health of rivers, lakes and stream
is important. River is important because of the fact that rivers carry water and
nutrients to areas all around the earth, they play a very important part in the water
cycle, acting as drainage channels for surface water. Rivers drain nearly 75% of the
earth’s surface.

Need for this Study

The effect of this local water pollution maybe observed during intense rainfall.
Scattered trash would often accumulated canals which causes obstruction. In turn,
the clogging of drainages results in severe flooding, affecting numerous people
within the locality. Additionally, flooding is also the biggest factor that affects the
numerous of Leptospirosis cases in the Philippines. According to Department of
Health(DOH) there were 1,030 cases of leptospirosis recorded nationwide. Aside
from heavy traffic, corruption, economic problem and poverty, another major problem
In the Philippines is poor waste management. People tend to throw their garbages
everywhere in rivers, canals, ocean and stream which can lead to a polluted water. A
polluted water is a polluted place to live in, bacteria and viruses are everywhere
specially in a polluted water.

Background
In the area of Barangay Lumbayao there were a lot of drainage which has been
clogged by garbage and waste, most garbage that can be seen is plastic bottles,
diapers, cellophane and unused things which has been thrown in small canals
dericted to the drenage. In the area of Lumbayao which can be address as an Purok-
7 there are garbage has been thrown everywhere in the drainages which has been
caused to clogging and flooding during the intense rainfall.

It is important to prevent flooding in Barangay Lumbayao because if not, these would

cause an landslide in high mountains that surrounds the area. These would damage
lives of people living in that area, agriculture and nature. Prevention and
preparedness is important specially that Barangay Lumbayao is prone to landslide, It
has been reported that during the typhoon Odette the area of Lumbayao which is
known to be located in the their famous eagle statue has been said that its land has
been collapsed and fall directly to the river. On that day heavy truck and motor
cycles are not allowed to cross the highway because the land might collapse and it
would cause a huge damage. People are obliged to stay and not allowed to be near
in an landslide prone area.

The significant purpose of this project is to prevent the flooding in Barangay

Lumbayao, these project is essential to the Barangay’s environmental development
and safeteness, It is also aims to be a solution to Barangay’s struggle with water
pollution and also Filipinos to have initiative and be more responsible in taking care
of the environment and its natural resources.

Objectives
The sole purpose of this project is to lessen the severity of water pollution, land slide
and flooding in Barangay Lumbayao, Valencia City, Bukidnon through simple yet
effective solution. Additionally, this is also aims the following:
1.To lessen the seriousness of flooding during the heavy rainfall.
2. To regulate the amount of garbage by using eco-friendly nets.
3. To reduce the case of the flood- caused disease such as leptospirosis
and mosquito – induced illness.
4. All the garbage floating in the drainage would pile up in the net and be
taken in to the dumping site.
5. For the safety and cleanliness of thr Barangay Lumbayao.

Research Questions
6. Does the trash trap prevent the flooding in the area?
7. Does the cases of mosquito borne disease and leptospirosis will be
lessen?
8. Does the project is an effective way cleaning the drainages?

Research Methodology
In order to obtain such, the researcher would gather the necessary and valid
information needed for the proposal. The researcher will have a through background
on the project itself. Also, the materials needed will be conducted. Since the project
will carry out in the Barangay, the expected participants for the project are the local,
the Barangay officials, the SK and volunteers who would be a big help in the
execution of the project.
Research Timeline
The project is expected to be completed in 5 weeks with the following indicated as
the activities duration for every section of the research project.

Research Section Duration

1. Tittle 3 days
2. Introduction 1 week
3. Needed for this Study 1 week
4. Background Rationale 4 days
5. Objectives 4 days
6. Research Questions/ Hypothesis 3 days
7. Research Methodology 4 days
8. Reviewing work for final submission 3 days
