As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth;

dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with
him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples,
"Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" But when he heard

Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have come to

1. We can only imagine what Jesus saw in Matthew, what it was that caused him to call
him to be a disciple. Much as we would like to know, we trust Jesus. As I think of Jesus
calling me, I like to think I know why. I pray that I may continue to follow Jesus – even

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course familiarizes the students with the beginning, growth, and spread of the Christian
Church as a community of disciples being animated and expressed in the celebration of the
sacraments. It also discusses the highlights of Vatican II vis-à-vis the challenges of Renewed
Integral Evangelization in the Philippine Church for more meaningful and active participation in
the celebration of the sacraments and the building up of the Christian and Lasallian community
in the modern world.

Furthermore, this course adheres to the DLSUD’s “Care for What Matters” approach by
observing special provisions on course content, modality, pacing, pedagogy, assessment type,
communication, and feedback based on applicable guidelines for safety amidst the current
challenges and limitations brought about by the pandemic. Hence, depending on your
circumstances, this class may be delivered either through a fully online mode or offline /
module-based mode. This course is also compliant with Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) and
21st Century Learning Design frameworks.

COURSE POLICIES AND REQUIREMENTS

1. Enrollment in the E-Class. The OUR shall enroll you in the e-class. This will be based on the class list
provided by the Office of the University Registrar and in the portal. For those who opted for printed
modules, you will be given the modules only if you are officially enrolled.

2. Communication and Feedback

a. Online Asynchronous Communications shall be done through one of the recommended means
for the synchronous communications, i.e., MS Teams chat, SB messages, and DLSU-D e-
mail. The maximum response time for asynchronous communication is 48 hours after receipt
of the communication, excluding Sundays and holidays. Below are the recommended
asynchronous communication platforms:
i. Forum – you can post your general concerns at the Forum Tab of the Schoolbook.
The forum is public, and any post can be seen by the class.
ii. Messaging – at Schoolbook. Any private or confidential matters may be sent through
Schoolbook messaging feature.
iii. Email – you may email your professor at ___________________________
iv. MS Teams chat. You may also use the MS Teams chat to send messages to your
professor.
b. Offline Communications are only for Students who opted for Printed Modules. Text
messaging, subject to a strict confidentiality agreement between the student and the professor,
maybe used. This mode of communication is exclusive only for the specified type of student.
Calls may be entertained within working hours (8 AM to 5 PM), while text messages may be
responded to within 48 hours, excluding Sundays and holidays.
c. Use of foul words, curses, and other bad words, whether in written or verbal communications
are not allowed. Similarly, no shouting, flooding of chat and messages, online selling, and
other communications unrelated to the course will be allowed.

3. Attendance Policy
a. Synchronous classes shall be scheduled based solely on the students’ certificate of registration
to avoid conflict of schedules with other classes.
b. The schedule of holding a synchronous session shall be announced at least a week before the
actual date of the session.
c. You are required to attend synchronous classes. Attendance in the synchronous classes may
NOT be graded. However, extra credit/ additional grades may be given to those who
religiously attend synchronous classes, or grades in synchronous classes may be part of the
class participation which shall be part of the enabling assessments. A maximum of 1.5% in
the class participation may be allotted for attendance in synchronous classes.
d. You may be excused from scheduled synchronous activity due to valid reasons such as
disruptions of internet connections, serious illness, death in the family, and any other reasons
analogous to the foregoing.
e. Synchronous classes shall push through regardless of the number of attendees.
f. The number of hours for REED synchronous classes must be at least 4.5 hours but not more
than 9 hours per term (midterm and finals).
g. Synchronous meetings may be recorded only upon agreement among all the students present
and the teacher. Any objection to the recording shall bar the recording of the session. The
recordings of the synchronous session shall be used for review purposes only. The teacher
must be the one to initiate the recording of the session. No student is allowed to start the

 recording without the permission of the teacher.

4. Intellectual Property Policy

a. Policy and copyright infringement will not be tolerated. Any violation of such will earn you a
grade of zero in the assessment.
b. The use of any illegally obtained software is strictly prohibited.
c. You are encouraged to use your original photos, videos, and other resources. Otherwise, you
can use royalty-free resources or embed the sources in your submissions to avoid copyright
infringement and/or plagiarism.
d. You are required to use your recent photo as your profile photo.
e. Inviting people who are not part of the class in synchronous meetings is strictly prohibited
unless approved by the subject teacher. Posing as another person during a synchronous
activity is strictly prohibited.
f. Giving passwords for Schoolbook and Office 365 to another person is strictly prohibited.
Likewise, accessing Schoolbook and Office 365 account other than your account is also
strictly prohibited. Any violation will be reported to the Student Welfare and Formation
Office (SWAFO).

5. Other Policies
a. You are not required to switch on your camera during synchronous classes.
b. Any student who decides to switch on his/her camera (upon agreement between the student

Overview
This subject will explain to us the nature of Christian discipleship by which disciples grow in the
Lord Jesus Christ and are equipped by the Holy Spirit. How God resides in our hearts, to
overcome the pressures and trials of this present life and become more and more Christlike.

WHAT IS CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP?

By definition, a disciple is a follower, one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines
of another. A Christian disciple is a person who accepts and assists in the spreading of the
good news of Jesus Christ. According to Scripture, being a Christian disciple involves
personal growth characterized by the following:

1. Putting Jesus first in all things (Mark 8:34-38). The disciple of Christ needs to be set apart
from the world. Our focus should be on our Lord and pleasing Him in every area of our
lives. We must put off self-centeredness and put on Christ-centeredness.

2. Following Jesus’ teachings (John 8:31-32). We must be obedient children and doers of
the Word. Obedience is the supreme test of faith in God (1 Samuel 28:18), and Jesus is
the perfect example of obedience as He lived a life on earth of complete obedience to the
Father even to the point of death (Philippians 2:6-8).

3. Fruitfulness (John 15:5-8). Our job is not producing fruit. Our job is to abide in Christ, and
if we do, the Holy Spirit will produce the fruit, and this fruit is the result of our obedience.
As we become more obedient to the Lord and learn to walk in His ways, our lives will
change. The biggest change will take place in our hearts, and the overflow of this will be
new conduct (thoughts, words, and actions) representative of that change. The change
we seek is done from the inside out, through the power of the Holy Spirit. It isn’t
something we can conjure up on our own.

4. Love for other disciples (John 13:34-35). We are told that the love of other believers is the
evidence of our being a member of God’s family (1 John 3:10). Love is defined and

 elaborated on in 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. These verses show us that love is not an emotion;
it is action. We must be doing something and involved in the process. Furthermore, we
are told to think more highly of others than of ourselves and to look out for their interests
(Philippians 2:3-4). The next verse in Philippians (verse 5) sums up what we are to do
when it comes to everything in life: “our attitude should be the same as that of Christ
Jesus.” What a perfect example He is to us for everything we are to do in our Christian
walk.

5. Evangelism – Making disciples of others (Matthew 28:18-20). We are to share our faith
and tell nonbelievers about the wonderful changes Jesus Christ has made in our lives. No
matter what our maturity level in the Christian life, we have something to offer. Too often,
we believe the lie from Satan that we don’t know enough or haven’t been a Christian long
enough to make a difference. Not true! Some of the most enthusiastic representatives of
the Christian life are new believers who have just discovered the awesome love of God.
They may not know a lot of Bible verses or the “accepted” way of saying things, but they
have experienced the love of the living God, and that is exactly what we are to share.
WHY IS CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP IMPORTANT?

In the first century, discipleship was the

process that a person went through to
become a rabbi. Rabbis would select
young men whom they believed could
become rabbis in the future. It was
common that at the age of twelve or
thirteen a young man would be selected
to become a disciple and would then
travel around several years with their
rabbi. Rabbis would frequently publicly
preach and teach with a group of young
men following them, and the idea was
that those young men were apprentices
or rabbis in training.

During their discipleship, the young men

were being trained in the way of their
rabbi. They would be trained in his
theology, how he taught, his philosophy,
and how he believed the Jews should

function during that time.

The rabbi hoped that when they died, the young men they had trained would then take on
their mantle, and their way of doing things would then continue.

Discipleship then, at its basic level, is growing and maturing in your faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul says this in 1 Corinthians 11:1 “And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.” In
this verse, he is laying out the key actions and principles of discipleship––imitating your

teacher as they imitate Christ. Because as disciples of Christ, we are called to be
transformed into the image of God.

Discipleship is important because we want people to become fully committed followers of

Christ. Discipleship helps believers to grow in their faith, to grow in maturity and wisdom,
and build their faith on a strong foundation so that they can then disciple and lead others
towards Christ.

In learning the history and reasoning behind discipleship, we can see much easier now, the
importance of discipleship in the Church. Not only was discipleship a long-practiced method
of teaching and growth, but it is also the same method that Jesus our Savior, used to teach
and lead.

Discipleship ensures thorough teaching of the word and is a way to be sure that believers
don’t fall through the cracks, becoming complacent and without purpose.

A few reasons why discipleship is so important

a. Growth - One reason discipleship is so deeply important is found in its counteracting of
complacency. Churches that only teach from the pulpit, and do not implement ways for
individuals to be walked alongside by a seasoned Christian, become stagnant and pulpit
focused.

Discipleship introduces accountability into the new believer’s life, beginning with the
basics and urging them on towards deeper things. It’s one thing to hear the truth from the
pastor, but to have someone holding you accountable, encouraging you to press on, and
walking through life with you is another thing entirely.

Discipleship helps to deepen and grow the believer’s faith in Christ, as the newer disciple
follows the example of the seasoned Christian who has already walked through the things,
they are sure to face.

Hebrews 6:1: “Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and
be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts
that lead to death, and of faith in God”.

b. Sound Doctrine - Another key aspect of discipleship is learning sound doctrine. In the
book of Titus, Paul, over and over again, urges Titus to know and teach sound doctrine
and to also appoint elders who were firm in the right teaching.

Discipleship is designed to teach those who are “infants” in the faith, what is by Christ’s
teaching. Everyone gets it wrong sometimes, especially when we’re just starting, so it’s
important to have someone who is more thoroughly versed in the faith, showing the
correct teachings of Christ.

It also should be noted that all believers should be able to teach the word of God and be
ready to answer the hope of their salvation.

 Titus 2:1-2: “You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. Teach the
older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love
and endurance”.

1 Peter 3:15: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to answer
everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with
gentleness and respect”.

c. Raising Leaders – Finally, we come to raising leaders. Discipleship is first, helping

brothers and sisters along in their faith so that they draw closer to Christ. But another
element is raising leaders.

Just as the original design of discipleship in Jesus’ time was laid out, the same principle
lives today. Discipleship is meant to pass on the wisdom and leadership of Christ to every
person who seeks to follow him.

Christians are not meant to stay stagnant in the body, looking to one man for guidance
and direction, it is instead the whole body that should be active and working together,
operating in sound doctrine and individual giftings.

So, we can now conclude that discipleship is key to the Christian faith. We see the model
laid out in the Bible, beginning with Jesus, and the whole point is to raise believers who
are dedicated to Him, and as a result, step into the calling that God has given.

Hebrews 5:12-14: “In fact, though by this

time you ought to be teachers, you need
someone to teach you the elementary
truths of God’s word all over again. You
need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives
on milk, being still an infant, is not
acquainted with the teaching about
righteousness. But solid food is for the
mature, who by constant use have
trained themselves to distinguish good
from evil”.

WHAT ARE THE 3 ASPECTS OF DISCIPLESHIP?

It’s important to note that as a person matures the mentor does not stop using the previous method
of discipleship, but simply adds to it an additional method of discipleship. Here are 3 aspects of
discipleship in which a person typically experiences them along the journey from non-believer to
mature disciple or leader.

1. Person-Oriented Discipleship. This is where most discipleship relationships begin, particularly

between a Christian and a non-Christian. In this kind of discipleship, the mentor is focused
almost entirely on the apprentice’s relationship with and attitude toward Jesus. The goal is to

 help the person being disciplined to believe in and experience the person of Jesus Christ at work
in his or her life. It is the most casual kind of discipleship and it often happens as friends in the
context of everyday life: at the office, over a meal during your lunch break, playing golf, or hanging
out while watching the big game. You can think of this as discipleship of the heart.

2. Content-Oriented Discipleship. This kind of discipleship often happens between both a mature
Christian and a seriously interested, but not yet converted non-Christian, or a mature Christian
and an eager to grow Christian who is typically newer in his or her faith. With content-oriented
discipleship, the mentor and apprentice typically spend most of their time reading through books
of the Bible together, studying doctrine, and discussing specific topics such as the Trinity, the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus, spiritual growth, and obedience. This is the stage in which a
person is learning what the Bible teaches, why it’s important and how it should affect his or her
life. You can think of this as discipleship of the head.

During this phase, a mentor must be sure to continue with the person-oriented discipleship, while
adding to its content-oriented discipleship. A person can’t grow in Christ if he or she doesn’t know
about Christ. Content-oriented discipleship ensures that the apprentice is learning about Christ,
while person-oriented discipleship ensures that he or she is getting to personally know Christ.

3. Task-Oriented Discipleship. Where person and content-oriented discipleship are focused typically
on the matters of the heart and head, task-oriented discipleship is concerned with matters of the
hands. In this type of discipleship, the mentor is typically training the apprentice to do a particular
task or responsibility such as lead a small group discussion, oversee an area of ministry, or serve
in a particular way.

The mentor does not abandon the matters of the heart and head, but rather helps the apprentice
understand how the matters of the heart should inform the way they think (head) and affect the
way they use their skills (hands). Good follow-up and coaching allow the apprentice to not only
learn a skill but to understand how the gospel should inform the way they think about and do that
skill.

To be effective disciple-makers we must capitalize on all three kinds of discipleship. This enables
us to make well-rounded disciples who not only believe the gospel but whose lives are shaped by
the gospel.
