2 Northern Uganda Children Marathon 2012

ABSTRACT
Art for Children Uganda (ACU) is a community based organisation that started in 2006. ACU uses
creative means of working with children through art based education, life skill training, psychosocial
support programs and art workshops for children and youth in prison. ACU promotes art as a tool
for positive interpersonal relationship, creative expression, and improved scholastic achievement
among children and youth in Northern Uganda.

ACU is organizing Northern Uganda Children Marathon 2012 as one of the way of promoting child
right1 and uniting children with hope for the future. Play is essential to the development of a child
because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and
youth. Play also offers an ideal opportunity for parents to engage fully with their children. Despite
the benefits of play for both children and parents, time for free play has been markedly reduced for
children in Northern Uganda. This is due to a variety of factors that have reduced play, including
changes in family structure like child headed families, conflicts, early marriage and poverty that
forced children into child labour like house work, brick making and farming at the expense of recess
or free child-centered play.

The Northern Uganda Children Marathon 20122 seeks to advocate for access to play by helping
families, school, and communities consider how best to ensure that play is protected as they seek
the balance in children’s lives to create the optimal developmental milieu by making children
run/walk 1.5km and 3km for children under 12 and under 18 respectively. This marathon is not
about running, it’s to celebrate life reach for the future, honoring the memory of life lost through
tragedy, celebrating the gift of life given equally to each person, unite Ugandans in hope and
reaching forward into the future to life yet to be lived. This is the spirit in which the Northern
Uganda Children Marathon was conceptualized by Art for Children Uganda.

ACU has team up with Atonga Foundation, Youth Strengthening Strategy-Gulu, Can Apoto Atura
United, Rao Community Development Initiative, Concerned Children and Youth Association,
Children Chance International, Transparency International Uganda and Adina Foundation Uganda
to make the events colorful and successful. For this first Annual inaugural Children Marathon, the
launch shall be conducted in Lira district on the 8th December, we are looking at 5,000 participants
(children, youth and adults) both runners and walkers across Uganda and foreign countries to
participate in the event.

The Northern Uganda Children Marathon 2012 proceeds will support 100 children in Adina
Foundation Rehabilitation Centre Lira, Children in Lira Babies Home, Children in Remand Home Gulu
to assist them access basic education, scholastic materials, medical care, basic needs, play materials
ACU shall also use the marathon as a Fundraising avenue to support ACU interventions.

CONTEXT
Play is so important to the optimal child development that it has been recognized by the United
Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child. This birthright is challenged
by forces including child labor, exploitation practices, war, neighborhood violence, and the
limited resources available to children living in poverty and from arm conflict. Many children in
Northern Uganda don’t have access to play due to changes in family structure like child headed
families, conflicts, early marriage and poverty that forced children into child labour like house
work, brick making and farming that may limit the protective benefits they would gain from
child-driven play. Because every child deserves the opportunity to develop to their unique
potential, Art for Children Uganda uses creative means to advocates for all factors that interfere
with optimal development and press for circumstances that allow each child to fully reap the
advantages associated with play.

As a tribute to the victims, family members and survivors of the LRA insurgency, Art for Children
Uganda shall organize Northern Uganda Children Marathon 2012 in Lira to give support to the
disadvantaged children, to involve community participation in supporting children education, to
encourage Ugandans in the continuing process of coping with the tragedy of the past and a step
toward a better future. The idea for organizing this marathon is to remember the LRA victims
and survivors especially children and as a fundraiser for Art for Children Uganda this year to
support the disadvantaged children in Northern Uganda. We credit God with getting us this far,
and we trust Him to take us on.

For the marathon to truly honor the memories of the lost and serve to inspire the living to a
greater accomplishment, we need to give God thanks for the lives of orphaned children and
vulnerable children that have been rescued, raised and rebuilt through the years of the
insurgency in Northern Uganda. Whether this will be your first marathon, or one of the many,
whether you are a beginner or an elite athlete, this will be the best marathon you have to
experience. This marathon shall be a wonderful analogy of the character of our people, the
history of our trials and difficulties, and the way in which we have overcome and persevered
the past. The Northern Uganda Children Marathon 2012 shall provide an appropriate way for us
to honor the victims and survivors, while at the same time celebrating the miracle of life. It is
our hope that you will join Art for Children Uganda, children/people from Northern Uganda,
this nation and even the world in giving this gift to the victims’ families, the survivors, and our
community through this great event.
