Discovering the 20th Century Music, Impressionism and
Composers
The history of the Twentieth century is a period of many changes and a time of
great expansion and development. It was dominated by chain of events that shows significant changes
in world history that includes the two global wars: World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-
1945). The advancement in science and technology and inventions in the fields of transportation and
communication greatly influenced humanity. The arts follow the materialistic and mechanized age of
the present world and society’s return to objectivity, expressionism, and functionalism.
The 20th century Music can be described as sudden changes and advancement in technology
that brought dramatic innovations in forms and styles of music.
IMPRESSIONISM is a French movement that derived from Claude Monet’s painting
“Impression Sunrise” in 1872. This movement influenced the world of music which brought out the
mood, feeling, atmosphere and scene in a composition. Impressionism in music made used of the whole-
tone scale, translucent and hazy texture, irregular rhythm in terms of phrases, lacking a dominant-tonic
relationship, and overlapping chords with 4th, 5th, octaves, and 9th intervals resulting in a non-
traditional harmonic order and resolution. Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel are the foremost
proponents of this movements.
CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862-19180)
Claude Debussy was born on August 22, 1862, in France. He was considered
the primary exponent of the impressionist movement and the focal point of the
impressionist composers. He gained a reputation of being an erratic pianist and rebel in
theory and harmony and dissolved the traditional rules and convention into new
language of possibilities in harmony, form, rhythm, texture and color. He composed
more or less 227 compositions ranging from orchestral, chamber, piano, opera ballets, songs and other
vocal music. One of his popular composition is the “Claire de Lune” or the Moonlight. He died from
cancer on March 25, 1918 in Paris, France.
JOSEPH MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937)
Maurice Ravel was born on March 7, 1875, in Ciboure, France. His style is
characterized by its uniquely innovative but not atonal of harmonic treatment and his
compositions requires a technical virtuosity from the performer. One of his popular
composition is the “Bolero” and approximately he composed 60 pieces for the piano,
chamber music, song cycles, ballet and opera. He died in Paris in 1937.

II. Objectives

lifestyle.
Study Concept
III. LIFESTYLE AND MANAGING IT
The way in which an individual life is called lifestyle. This includes the typical
patterns of an individual’s behavior like an everyday routine at home, in school, or at
work; eating, sleeping, and exercise habits, and many others. These patterns of
behavior are related to elevated or reduced health risks.
Managing your lifestyle entails making modifications in your routine especially
in those aspects that elevate health risks. Food choice, physical activity, and eating
habits are some of the aspects of your lifestyle that can be modified to improve it.
These modifications should be done gradually, like reducing the intake of fatty food,
getting up to reach for something instead of asking someone to get it for you, or
walking faster and more often. The idea is that for health risks to be reduced, changes
in your lifestyle should be made.
The other variables in your lifestyle, however, can be modified to achieve a
healthier life. Such variables include nutrition, body weight, physical activity, and
health habits.
Modifying your eating habits can aid you in managing your weight. Opting for
more nutritious food can help lessen health risks and improve your physique. Some
of the common tips in weight management are including fruits and vegetables in your
meals, reducing the intake of sweets, preparing your meals ina healthier way, and
decreasing portion sizes.
An unhealthy lifestyle brings with it certain diseases that can shorten your
lifespan. These diseases, known as non-communicable diseases (NCDs), are not
transmitted from person to person, yet kill more than 36 million people each year. Also
called chronic diseases, they are of long duration, and are generally of slow
progression. The four main types of NCDs are cardiovascular diseases (like
enlargement of the heart and hypertension), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases
(such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma), and diabetes.
