A. Course Description

This course, briefly, consist of main principles of structural analysis, virtual work
principles, influence lines, and to determine the reactions at supports, bending moment and
shear diagrams for either determinate or indeterminate systems using some specific
methods such as force method, displacement methods, and stiffness methods.

B. Course Objectives (Learning Outcomes)

The students successfully understand the fundamental concepts of indeterminate structural

systems using classical approximate analyses or detailed structural analyses. By using the
structural analyses, the students will be able to solve deflected shapes and internal forces
belonging to indeterminate engineering problems required for structural design.

C. Required Text and Supplies

o STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS, 6th Edition, by RC. Hibbeler, published by Pearson

Prentice Hall in 2005.
o STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS: using classical and matrix methods, 4th Edition, by
JC. McCormac, published by John Wiley in 2007 (Recommended book as another
supplemental material).
D. Grading

Coursework will be weighted as follows:

i. Quizzes 30 (%)
ii. Mid-Term Exam 30 (%)
iii. Final Exam 40 (%)

E. Quizzes

Students will have 5 quizzes consisting one question. Quiz dates are given in the tentative
schedule below. Worst of quizzes will not be count for probable private reasons (4 of them
will be count). Quizzes will be held on Thursday in the classroom.

F. Classroom Rules

i. Food is not permitted in the class (except beverage)

ii. No calling but free to text-message in class.

G. Ideas, Evaluations, Etc.

In general, your ideas, comments, suggestions, questions, etc. are welcome. Your discretion
in these matters is expected, however. You are encouraged to take advantage of the
instructor office-hours (or via mail) for help with coursework or anything else connected
with the course and your progress.
