CONCEPT NOTES
CULTURAL PRACTICE AND SYMBOLS
Despite a string of largely unsympathetic rulers, the turbulent history of the Philippines has nonetheless
managed to produce a friendly, resilient, family-oriented, deeply religious and artistic population, most
of whom are indigenous, Spanish or of mixed heritage.

Philippine History on Spanish Heritage

 Originally, the various islands were populated by competing tribes, each with their own king or
queen.
 In 1521, the explorer Magellan claimed the islands for Spain and colonization began in 1565.
And Manila was established as the capital of what was then known was the Spanish East Indies
in 1571.
 Spanish rule brought Catholicism to the area, with missionaries establishing churches, schools,
hospitals, universities and largely displacing the previously entrenched Hindu, Islamic and
Buddhist faiths.
 Free education was introduced in 1863, but did not take off until much later.
 Free trade was introduced during the 19th century which brought wealth to the population.
 Evidence of Spanish rule can be seen across the Philippines, particularly in the plentiful
Baroque churches and the walled Intramuros district of Manila.
Philipine Culture
 The culture of the Philippines comprises a blend of traditional Filipino and Spanish Catholic
traditions, with influences from America and other parts of Asia.
 The Filipinos are family oriented and often religious with an appreciation for art, fashion, music
and food.
 Filipinos are also hospitable people who love to have a good time. This often includes getting
together to sing, dance, and eat.
 The annual calendar is packed with festivals, many of which combine costumes and rituals
from the nation’s pre-Christian past with the Catholic beliefs and ideology of present day.

Concept Notes:
SOCIAL PRACTICES
 Social practices, rituals and festive events are habitual activities that structure the lives of
communities and groups and that are shared by and relevant to many of their members.
 They are significant because they reaffirm the identity of those who practice them as a group or a
society and, whether performed in public or private, are closely linked to important events.
 Social practices shape everyday life and are familiar to all members of the community, even if not
everybody participates in them.

Social practices, rituals and festive events involve a dazzling variety of forms:
 worship rites;
 rites of passage;
 birth, wedding and funeral rituals;
 oaths of allegiance;
 traditional legal systems;
 traditional games and sports;
 kinship and ritual kinship ceremonies;
 settlement patterns;
 culinary traditions;
 seasonal ceremonies;
 practices specific to men or women only (hunting, fishing and gathering practices and many
more)
 also include a wide variety of expressions and physical elements: special gestures and words,
recitations, songs or dances, special clothing, processions, animal sacrifice, special food.

CONCEPT NOTES
Philippine Economy and Political Situation
The Philippines began to undertake political and economic reforms in the late 1980s and early
1990s, however, and GDP growth has accelerated to about 5 percent a year since 1994. With
faster growth, the percentage of Filipinos living below the poverty line is decreasing, but
agricultural reform and increased investment in human capital would allow a more drastic
reduction in the poverty rate.

Exchange and trade policies. For many years, the Philippines pursued an industrial policy that
encouraged import substitution rather than promoting exports. Until tariff reforms were
introduced in 1991, trade policies heavily penalized the primary and agricultural sectors and
benefited the manufacturing sector.

Tax policy. Indirect taxes (for example, value-added taxes, excise taxes, and customs duties)
account for about 70 percent of tax revenues in the Philippines; it would therefore be easy to
conclude that the overall tax system must be regressive.

Income distribution and government policies. While economic policies have clearly affected
poverty rates and income distribution in the Philippines, unequal income distribution has made it
difficult to enact reforms that would increase equity.
