LP Final Revised

The lesson plan discusses bias and prejudice. It includes activities to help students distinguish different types of bias and prejudice, identify biased statements, and make decisions weighing information. Students will play a game called "Bawal Judgmental" where they choose answers to questions about pictures of people. This is meant to explore their ability to judge without bias or prejudice. The lesson defines bias as having disproportionate weight in favor of or against something in an unfair way due to a personal distortion of judgment.

Exactly. It is a segment of a famous noontime
television show Eat Bulaga.

Today, we are going to play “Bawal Judgemntal.

Some of you are going to be our guest judges,

and all you have to do is make a right choice.
You will have seven choices, and from these
choices you have to select whom you think
answers the questions.
There will be two rounds of questions with two
different sets of choices.

Are you ready my amazing students? Yes, Ma’am.

Here’s the question.

‘Who among them did you think are honor
students?’ Again, there are two correct answers. Students’ answers may vary.

Thank you, Lyka.

Alright, let’s reveal the answers.

The correct answers are, Raul and Zia.

Nice try, Lyka. I will still give you the blue stub.

Great judgment everyone. It seems you are good

in judging. (Just Kidding)

B. Discussion
So based on our previous activity, do you have
any idea or insights on what we are going to Students’ answers may vary.
discuss today?
Good Job, Darren.
Another one?
Nice idea. Students’ answers may vary.
Thank you, Elaisa and Ashley

Class, our lesson for today is about Bias and

Prejudice.
Do you have any idea what bias and prejudice
are? Students’ answers may vary.
Nice try Cyrus.

Okay class, let’s start with Bias.

Joshua, kindly read the definition of Bias.
Bias is disproportionate weight in favor of or
against one thing, person, or group compared with
another usually in a way considered to be unfair to
someone.
It is highly personal or contortion of judgment.
Thus, someone who looks at things with bias
usually tends to stick up to his own judgment, no
matter how distorted it is.”

Thank you Joshua.

Class, Bias means that you prefer something

over another. It is partial viewpoint
demonstrated either when in favor or against
something or someone, generally considered
unfair. To be a truly biased to lack a viewpoint
on a particular topic. Somewhere along the line,
bias took on a negative connotation.

So class, how do bias become for or against with

something or someone?
Simply because, bias have both positive and
negative attitudes. It becomes positive when we
use the preposition ‘towards’.
For example, if someone is biased about women
they can take two different approaches;
If they are biased toward women, we used the
preposition .toward’, it means thinking
positively of women.
Let’s say that, I am the owner of a company, my
tendency is to hire only women because I feel
they make better employees.
Remember I am biased ‘towards’ women.

It becomes negative when we use the preposition

‘against’.
For example, Still I am the owner of a company
but I am biased against women, so I’m thinking
negatively of women, my tendency is to hire a
men over a more qualified female candidates.

Just remember, if we are biased towards

someone or something it means that, we think
positively of it but if we are biased against
someone or something it means that, we think
negatively of it.

Let’s have more examples.

1. In other Christian sectors, the preacher
position is only given to males. Because
they feel that males can make better.
2. Sectarian Schools only accept students who
share the same religious beliefs.

In the given examples, a certain group of people

is given favor against the other.
In number one, other Christian sectors are
toward among males. They think positively
among males.
In number two, student who were interested to
study in a school but don’t share the same
religion cannot be admitted. School is against on
them.

Let us now have the different kinds of Bias.

1. Confirmation Bias- is the tendency to

seek out, interpret, judge and remember
information so that it supports one’s pre-
existing views and ideas.
2. Anchoring- is a bias that causes to rely
too heavily on the first piece of
information we are given about a topic.
3. Self-serving- refers to an individual’s
tendency to attribute positive events to
their character, but attribute negative
results or events to external factors
unrelated to themselves and their faults.
4. Availability Heuristic- it describes our
tendency to use information that comes
to mind quickly and easily when making
decision about the future.
5. Overconfidence bias- is the tendency for
a person to overestimate their abilities.
6. In-group favoritism- is the tendency for
people to give preferential treatment to
others who belong to the same group that
they do.
7. Selective Perception- is the tendency not
to notice and more quickly forget stimuli
that cause emotional discomfort and
contradict our prior beliefs.
8. Halo and Horn effect- Halo effect is a
positive first impression that lead us to
treat someone more favorably. While
horn effect is a negative first impression
that leads us to treat someone less
favorably.

Let us now move on to prejudice. Prejudice is an effective feeling towards a person

Karla kindly read the definition of prejudice. or group member based solely on that person’s
group membership. It is also a preconceived
opinion that is not based on actual experience or
reason.”

Now class, prejudice is an effective feeling

towards a person or group, this feeling maybe
translated into action by discriminating against
the person or members of the target group.

An individual maybe prejudiced against others

based on factors such as:
Race, Age, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Class
status, Religion and Nationality.

For example:
1. I don’t want blacks living in my
neighborhood.
2. I don’t want foreigners owning business in
my town.
3. I don’t want LGBT community in my City.

These examples clearly show that there are

prejudices going on. The statement pre judge
against black people, foreigner and LGBT
members. Basically, because of their race,
nationality and orientation. Even these people
have not done anything wrong yet, but because
of their background or appearances people tend
to prejudge them and eventually discriminate
them. This is very common in our society even
at this very present time.
Let us now have the different kinds of
Prejudice.

1. Racism- a person or people on the basis of

their membership in a particular racial or
ethnic group, typically one that is minority
or marginalized.
2. Sexism- discrimination based on sex
especially against women.
3. Homophobia- Against homosexuality.
4. Ageism- Against a particular age group.
5. Religious Intolerance- is intolerance of
another’s religious beliefs or practices.
6. Classism- is the systematic oppression of
subordinated class groups to advantage and
strengthen the dominant class groups.
7. Colorism- discrimination especially within a
racial or ethnic group favoring people with
lighter skin over those with black skin.
Class, did you experience judging others? Students’ answers may vary.

Great explanation. I will give you the yellow

one stub. Students answer may vary.

How about being discriminated by the others?

In what ways? Thank you, Ma’am.

I’m glad that you overcome it. I’ll give you

also the yellow stub.

So class, sometimes we make decisions simply

because, it feels right, we call it a hunch, an
intuition or gut feeling.

So class, do you think it’s wrong to judge

people with such little information?
I know all of you will say ‘No’. But, despite
our best efforts, we all judge others. It might be
over some small things like what they post in
social media or their choice of music or it
might be over bigger issues such as a person
who behaves selfishly or hurts our feelings.

In some situations, judgment need to be made.

Such as deciding who will be our friends,
which politician to vote or whether an outfit
looks good on you. Without this ability to
evaluate and make choices, how would you
make any decisions or understand right from
wrong.

So basically we judge all the time. We became

biased or prejudge most of the time. However,
what would be the consequences of pre-
judging people?
Just like anything else, judging others have
good and bad sides. When we make choices
based on observing and evaluating other
people, we are using an important skill but
when we judge people from a negative
perspective, or without knowing all the facts,
being biased of pre judging others is likely to
be harmful to the both of you.

I’m sure you have heard this quotation;

‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ Right? Students’ answers may vary.

What does it mean?

It means that you shouldn’t make a judgment

about someone or something be it a book or
otherwise based only on their appearances.
However, as I’ve said we as human beings
often use labels or categories to describe
others, categorizing things or people is a
natural human inclination. However, people
often make assumptions about groups of
people they don’t even know and that may Yes, Ma’am”
have serious effects.

Now class, did you understand what bias and

prejudice are?

Well, because of that, we will be having an

activity for you to have a better understanding
on it.

This activity is entitled ‘Hammer me’.

Let me explain to you the mechanics of the

game.

For you to have an access on this game you

need to go into our Google classroom and click
the link I have sent.

Once you are in, you will see a hammer and a

hole, all you have to do is to breakdown those
correct answers that will pop up for you to gain
points.

There are incorrect answers that you need to

avoid in order for you to finish the game as
quickly as you can.

You only have 30 seconds for each round and

we have 12 rounds in this game.

In addition, those correct answers are the

different kinds of bias, so you need to avoid
other kinds and unnecessary words.

Lastly, we have our leaderboard to monitor

who’s on the top or making a fast move.

Are you ready class? Students started to play.

That’s good to hear, it seems you really enjoy
while learning. Answers:
Let’s get started class. 1. Confirmation
2. Anchoring
3. Self-serving
4. Overconfidence
5. In-group favoritism
6. Halo and horn effect
C. Application

It seems that most of you really enjoy the

activity so let’s have another one.

This activity or game is entitled

BAAMBOOZLE.
Let me explain to you the mechanics of the
game.

I have here numbers from 1-10.

Each number contains different images that
you need to identify if it is bias or prejudice.
You only have 10 seconds to give your answer.
There’s a twist, from these numbers there are
power ups which means that there are points
that will add on your score. Yes, Ma’am.
Secondly, there is also a ‘BAM ‘which means Students raises their hands.
that you were going to deduct points from your
opponent. The students active participated.
Lastly there are phrases saying that you need to
deduct points from your own scores.
Did you understand, class?
Now, who wants to volunteer?
Thank you, Ma’am.
This game is really an interesting right?
Are you guys ready? Okay, let the game
begins.
(Teacher started to show a picture) Students’ answers may vary.

Thank you class. You did a great job!

Let’s give them an ‘Aling dionisia clap’.

D.Generalization

I know you have gain a lot of knowledge from

today's lesson, so anyone who can sum up our
discussion today?

Very well said!

Kindly check and click the link I have sent in

our Google classroom.

It is a quiz game for everyone.

The mechanics of this quiz game is you have to
answer the question correctly for you to
proceed on the next question.
All of your answers are visible to me and we
also have the leader board to monitor who got
the highest scores.
